Role and Objectives:
The Mass Timber Engineer, reporting to the Head of Engineering, is responsible for a variety of in-house engineering tasks in the fields of prefabricated mass timber, prefabricated light wood frame walls/ trusses/ floors, and both light wood frame and mass timber volumetric modular projects. Their expertise is required to provide input to projects during budgeting and tender, design-assist, fabrication design, and to complete construction documents for elements and systems supplied by Kalesnikoff Mass Timber.
Responsibilities:
Estimating / Budget / Tender
- Provide input on projects incorporating delegated design to ensure realistic estimates
- Brainstorm alternative solutions where necessary
- Work closely with estimating team to ensure all necessary structural information is captured
- Review and comment on layouts and structural systems for mass timber and modular projects to assist with design development and produce a cost effective and constructable structural system
Design-Assist
- Work collaboratively with KMT’s Project Manager and external project teams during the design-assist phase for the benefit of the project
- Review and comment on value engineering opportunities for the structural system of mass timber and modular projects
- Brainstorm and present solutions to challenges brought forward by the project team
- Perform simple calculations to provide guidance to structural engineers of record for member capacities and connection design to assist in the progression of their designs
Project Execution
- Work collaboratively with KMT’s Project Management team when structural engineering challenges arise during the course of construction and communicate with the Structural Engineer of Record
- Assist Project Managers in writing RFI’s where appropriate
- Perform delegated connection and member design for mass timber projects
- Perform independent reviews for structural designs done internally by other KMT Engineers
- Complete structural design of modular units in all phases of execution, including lifting and final in-service conditions
- Perform shop and field reviews of elements and systems within KMT’s scope of engineering work
- Provide input and assistance with new design standards and guidelines for mass timber, prefabricated light wood frame, and modular offerings
General
- Maintain up to date knowledge of mass timber and modular-related codes and standards in Canada and the USA
- Participate in conferences, code committees, and research collaboratives to further the use of mass timber in our sales regions and contribute to creative mass timber solutions at KMT and ensure knowledge is transferred to the broader team
- Create and maintain internal structural engineering calculation tools
- Create and maintain in-house resources for project managers, estimating, and design technologists
- Perform structural design for small scale internal/capital projects
- Interacting effectively and professionally with customers, contractors, project stakeholders, co-workers and industry peers
- Manage multiple competing priorities to ensure deadlines are met both internally and externally
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in structural engineering
- Registration as a P.Eng. in any Canadian province with the ability to register in British Columbia
- Registration as a PE in any US state is an asset
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in structural engineering
- 5 years’ direct structural engineering experience in mass timber
- Experience in structural engineering of modular construction is an asset
- In depth knowledge of construction documents, and prefabricated construction in general
- In-depth knowledge of CSA O86, NDS and/or EC5 with regards to mass timber
- Strong familiarity with Part 3, 4, and 9 of the BCBC 2024 is an asset
- Expertise in understanding and delineating subtrades scopes of work with respect to mass timber, and prefabricated light wood frame and modular construction
- Deep understanding of roles and responsibilities of professional engineers under the Code of Ethics and how this applies to your daily activities
- Ability to problem solve creative solutions for the benefit of KMT’s project delivery
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a customer focus
- Strong organizational & planning skills
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively

Compensation Package:
- Salary: $87,200.00 - $109,000.00 (dependent on experience)
- Schedule: Monday - Friday
