The Community Farm Field Worker supports Cheam Farm’s community food initiatives through a combination of agricultural production, community outreach, and culturally grounded food systems education. This role contributes to crop production while engaging community members through workshops, events, and food distribution programs that promote sustainable agriculture, ecosystem stewardship, and culturally significant plant knowledge. The position plays an important role in strengthening community connections to land, food security, and Indigenous food sovereignty initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitate community workshops, demonstrations, and educational activities related to agriculture, horticulture, ecosystem services, and culturally significant plant knowledge.
- Coordinate preparation and distribution of weekly farm produce boxes and community food access initiatives.
- Support planning and delivery of seasonal farm events, including annual Blueberry and Pumpkin U-Pick activities.
- Maintain and care for the community greenhouse, including crop propagation, watering, monitoring plant health, and general upkeep.
- Develop and maintain designated community garden plots, including planting, cultivation, harvesting, and seasonal maintenance.
- Assist with vegetable and blueberry field production, including planting, crop care, harvesting, and general farm labor.
- Operate farm tools and equipment safely, including irrigation systems, walk-behind tractors, and related equipment; perform basic maintenance and report repair needs.
- Engage respectfully with community members, visitors, and program participants, supporting a welcoming, culturally safe farm environment.
- Contribute to safe work practices and maintain organized, functional farm spaces across all operational areas.
- Other farm duties as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Interest in community food systems, sustainable agriculture, and culturally grounded food education.
- Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities, cultural programming, or food sovereignty initiatives.
- Experience facilitating workshops, training sessions, or educational programming related to agriculture, ecology, gardening, or cultural plant knowledge.
- Previous event coordination or community outreach experience.
- Farm, greenhouse, landscaping, or outdoor labor experience.
- Familiarity with basic farm equipment operation and maintenance.
Working Conditions
- Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm April 1st – October 31st (some weekend work during our July and October U-pick season)
- Farm work requires physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending and standing for long periods of time.
- Farm work occurs in all weather conditions
- This is a community facing farm position and requires understanding Indigenous communities and food security initiatives
