Full-Time Awake Overnight Child and Youth Worker

Pickering, Ontario
$30.00 per hour | 45 hours per week | 3 weeks paid vacation | On-site parking

Some of the most important work in a children’s home happens when the house gets quiet.

A young person may wake during the night and need support. The home needs to remain safe and settled. And when morning comes, the next day should begin with a prepared home, clear communication and familiar routines.

Renew Child and Youth Homes is looking for a dependable and experienced Child and Youth Worker to join our Pickering residence in a full-time awake overnight position.

This is not a sleep shift or passive supervision. We’re looking for someone who takes pride in being reliable, can work independently, notices what needs to be done and understands that even overnight, the work matters.

Our home is intentionally small. That gives our team the opportunity to really know the young people in our care: what helps them settle, what routines matter, what they enjoy, how they communicate when things are difficult and what they need from the adults around them.

Our approach is relationship-based, clinically guided and focused on creating a home that feels personal rather than institutional.

What You’ll Do

As our Awake Overnight Child and Youth Worker, you’ll help protect both the safety of the night and the rhythm of the home.

You will:

Remain awake, alert and responsible for the residence throughout the entire overnight shift
Complete required checks and maintain the safety and well-being of the children and youth in the home
Respond with patience, good judgement and appropriate support if a child or youth wakes or needs assistance during the night
Follow Plans of Care, safety plans, supervision requirements and established routines
Complete clear, objective and timely shift documentation, logs and incident reports when required
Communicate important information to the incoming team so there is continuity from one shift to the next
Use quieter overnight periods productively to help prepare the home for the following day
Prepare healthy, varied breakfasts, school lunches and snacks, getting to know what each child or youth enjoys while also following their dietary needs and preferences
Complete laundry, cleaning, restocking, household organization and other scheduled responsibilities that help keep the home comfortable and ready for the day
Assist with administrative tasks, files, forms, tracking sheets and other preparation requested by the leadership team
Help ensure the morning begins with an organized, welcoming home that is ready for the children, youth and incoming staff

Who We’re Looking For

The right person for this role is someone we can genuinely rely on.

You may be a great fit if you:

Have experience supporting children or youth in residential care, child welfare, developmental services, mental health, behavioural support or a related setting
Understand that behaviour is often communication and can look beyond the immediate behaviour to what a young person may need
Remain thoughtful and professional when emotions are high
Can build meaningful relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries
Are comfortable working independently while still being accountable to a team and shared plan
Communicate concerns early rather than leaving problems for the next shift
Write clear, objective and professional documentation
Are organized and able to manage several responsibilities throughout a shift
Take initiative and don’t need someone standing beside you to identify what needs to be done
Are comfortable cooking, preparing meals and completing the everyday household tasks that help make a residence feel like a home
Are punctual, consistent and take your commitment to scheduled shifts seriously

Qualifications

A diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care/Child and Youth Work, Social Service Work, Developmental Service Work, Behavioural Science, Psychology or a related field is preferred.

Previous experience in a children’s residence, staffed group home, foster-care support environment or other residential setting is a strong asset.

Candidates must also have, or be able to obtain as required:

Current First Aid and CPR certification
A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and other required background screening
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, professional boundaries, crisis prevention and behaviour support
The ability to complete the physical and household responsibilities associated with the position

UMAB, CPI or other recognized crisis-intervention training is an asset. Training can be provided.

Schedule

Sunday through Thursday, 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
45 scheduled hours per week

The regular work week begins Sunday night and concludes Friday morning.

This is a permanent awake overnight position. The successful candidate must remain awake, alert and actively engaged in their responsibilities throughout the entire shift.

Because RCYH operates around the clock, the successful candidate must also be available to work statutory holidays that fall on their regularly scheduled shifts.
