Career Opportunity
The TTC is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to join the Innovation and Strategic Projects team as the Energy Management Lead. This technical role at the TTC is responsible for advancing the organization’s Net Zero by 2040 commitment by leading energy management, electrification, and building decarbonization strategies across the organization’s facility portfolio. The Energy Management lead will combine technical expertise, financial analysis, and cross-functional collaboration to identify, prioritize, and advance energy and emission reduction initiatives from concept through implementation.
What You Will Do
Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability Strategy, the Energy Management Lead will play a key role in advancing TTC's commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. This position will lead energy monitoring, performance analysis, and energy modelling activities across TTC facilities to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs and emissions. The role will be responsible for developing business cases, financial analyses, and implementation strategies for energy conservation, facility decarbonization, and interim emissions reduction initiatives, including evaluation of lifecycle costs, operational benefits, emissions impacts, funding opportunities, and return on investment to support of TTC's Net Zero 2040 commitment. Specifically, you will:
Develop and lead TTC’s building energy management program, including the development and implementation of energy conservation, electrification, and decarbonization strategies that reduce energy consumption, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions across TTC facilities.
Lead the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of facility Net Zero Transition Plans, including technical assessments, decarbonization roadmaps, electrification strategies, and investment recommendations.
Establish and oversee enterprise-wide energy performance monitoring, analytics, benchmarking, and reporting processes to support evidence-based decision-making, continuous improvement, and prioritization of energy investments.
Establish and oversee enterprise-wide energy performance monitoring, analytics, benchmarking, and reporting programs to support evidence-based decision making and continuous improvement. Develop business cases, financial analyses, and prioritization frameworks for strategic energy and decarbonization initiatives, and lead their advancement through TTC’s Capital Investment Plan and related business planning processes to secure funding, approval, and implementation.
In alignment with the TTC’s Capital Investment Plan process, develop an intake strategy for Net Zero Transition Plan initiatives to identify, evaluate, prioritize, and advance energy conservation and decarbonization projects across the TTC’s facility portfolio.
Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including Plant Maintenance and Engineering, Construction & Expansion, Facilities, Operations, and Corporate Finance, to identify and advance energy reduction and fuel switching opportunities. Define project requirements, support business case development, and review project designs and specifications to ensure energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction objectives are incorporated throughout the asset lifecycle.
Work closely with operating personnel, consultants, and facility teams to identify and prioritize buildings requiring energy audits, field assessments, mechanical and electrical equipment inventories, and standard operating procedure reviews to support ASHRAE I and II assessments and implementation of recommended energy conservation measures. Oversee field visits of existing buildings to collect detailed information, including development of mechanical and electrical equipment inventories, and standard operating procedures to support consultant led and internal ASHRAE Level I and II assessments.
Identify and recommend energy conservation, electrification, fuel-switching, and building optimization measures, including operational, capital, and design improvements, and track implementation through to completion.
Work closely with the Sustainability team to ensure energy initiatives are integrated with corporate reporting, and greenhouse gas emissions quantification.
Develop and implement strategies to optimize utility consumption and costs, including rate analysis, demand management initiatives, and utility performance monitoring.
Lead the identification and pursuit of utility incentives, grants, and external funding opportunities to maximize program value and support implementation of energy conservation and decarbonization initiatives.
Manage consultants and technical service providers engaged in energy audits, decarbonization plans, energy modelling, commissioning activities, and related initiatives.
Support the development of internal energy performance standards, design guidance, and governance processes to embed energy efficiency, electrification, and low-carbon design considerations into facility planning, capital projects, and asset renewal decisions.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?
- Your education will consist of a completed University Degree or College Diploma in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building systems, applied science, engineering or a related discipline, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
- You must be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) and/or Certified RETScreen Expert (CRE) or similar designations are considered strong assets.
- Demonstrated experience using energy analysis and building performance software such as RETScreen, eQUEST, EnergyPlus, or similar tools.
- Several years of direct experience in the field of energy management (energy auditing, decarbonization, energy data analysis, buildings engineering, energy modelling) with a proven track record of delivering measurable energy, cost and greenhouse gas reductions.
- Demonstrated experience preparing business cases, conducting lifecycle cost analyses, and evaluating the financial impacts of energy conservation and decarbonization projects, and identifying funding, financing, and investment strategies to support implementation.
- Demonstrated experience integrating energy conservation and decarbonization initiatives into asset management plans, state of good repair programs, capital investment plans, infrastructure renewal projects, and corporate business planning processes to support long-term organizational objectives and emissions reduction targets.
- Experience preparing and presenting recommendations, business cases, technical reports, and briefing materials to senior leadership and diverse stakeholder groups.
- Experience working with complex industrial and office occupied buildings and developing strategies to reduce energy use intensity. Experience with a portfolio of buildings and building benchmarking is considered an asset.
- Experience developing conservation and demand management plans as well as supporting the development of energy policies and standards.
- Experience conducting energy audits, functional testing, retro- commissioning, reviewing meter trending data, and developing ongoing commissioning plans.
- Strong understanding of building energy systems, including HVAC, ventilation, domestic hot water, heating and cooling plants, district energy systems, and building envelope improvements designed to enhance energy performance, such as insulation, glazing, air sealing, and thermal performance improvements.
- Demonstrated familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), including the ability to interpret, analyze, extract, and utilize system data to support energy performance optimization.
- You must have experience with reviewing technical design specifications and drawings, providing recommendations to improve energy efficiency, integrate sustainability considerations and incorporate lower -carbon alternatives.
- Experience supporting the delivery of energy conservation, retro-commissioning, and decarbonization projects, including coordination with consultants, contractors, facility staff, operations teams, and capital project delivery groups.
- Proficiency in computerized applications and analytical tools including Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas VBA, and Power Query), Power BI, RETScreen Expert.
- Experience working with energy modelling software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus), and analysis and benchmarking of large facility portfolio datasets using tools such as ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is considered an asset.
- Experience working with utility, metering, sub-metering, and building automation system data, including data validation, normalization, trend analysis, and the development of performance baselines to support energy management, measurement and verification, and capital planning.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ISO 50001, the Toronto Green Standard, and energy-related ASHRAE standards . and guidelines (e.g., 90.1, 100, 211), and industry best practices related to energy management, building decarbonization, energy auditing, and commissioning such as related Energy & Atmosphere credits in LEED, and the Zero Carbon Building Standard (CaGBC).
- Experience developing scopes of work, reviewing consultant deliverables, and managing technical service providers for energy audits, energy modelling, commissioning, decarbonization planning, or related initiatives is considered an asset.
- Ability to prepare and interpret complex reports, recognize problems, and evaluate solutions.
- You must be able to travel to various project sites within the City of Toronto in a timely manner.
