SUMMARY
The histology technologist performs routine and special tests which requires exercising independent judgment and being accountable in decisions. The preparation of tissue specimens includes tissue grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, and special stains. Additional duties may include Immunohistochemistry (IHC). All technologists may be required to rotate between all the work benches mentioned above.
RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES
· Conducts diagnostic and interpretive specimen testing.
· Maintains, operates, troubleshoots all equipment, reagents and supplies to ensure optimum performance at all times.
· Verifies all quality control results to ensure they meet the limits of acceptability.
· Ensures that proficiency testing samples are processed in the same manner as patient samples.
· Maintains a high level of tissue and document quality.
· Records all readings, calculations and results obtained on patient tests, quality control material.
· Participates in problem-solving for efficient specimen workflow.
· Reviews key performance indicators (KPIs), incidents, audits, inspections and continuous improvement opportunities resulting in implementation of corrective actions as required.
· Assists with the evaluation and implementation of new technology.
· Works in compliance with all acts, regulations and accreditation requirements.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE (Required)
· Registration in good standing with the CMLTO and CSMLS.
· Technical competence with a Laboratory Information System (LIS), MS Office applications.
· Observes laboratory safety practices and protocols.

· Able to utilize critical thinking skills and appropriately prioritizes work.
· Works collaboratively with the team and is knowledgeable when to direct questions to the supervisor or pathologist.
· Well-developed interpersonal, communication and documentation skills.
· Models behaviour to align with the values of Alpha Labs, policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
ETHICAL CONDUCT
· Treats each case with respect, maintains confidentiality and adheres to the requirements of PIPEDA and PHIPA.
