If you’re a detail-oriented professional who enjoys hands-on work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, we have an exciting opportunity for a Metering Technician to join our team. Our core business hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday (hours may vary based on project and site requirements). This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in delivering high-quality work in the field, from installing and commissioning submetering systems to troubleshooting and maintaining equipment. You’ll work closely with internal teams, contractors, and clients to ensure accurate, reliable metering solutions that support efficient energy management and make a meaningful impact.
METERING TECHNICIAN
General Description:
Under the general direction of the Vice President of Operations, the Metering Technician is responsible for the execution of field services in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements, including the commissioning, verification, and inspection of submetering systems. This role is essential to ensuring system accuracy, reliability, and compliance, while proactively identifying opportunities to enhance customer outcomes through continuous improvement and value-added services.
The Metering Technician operates with a high degree of independence in the field and works collaboratively with internal teams, contactors, and external stakeholders. This role requires the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, property management, and building staff to support operational excellence and a consistently high standard of customer service.
Characteristics, Features, Requirements:
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple technical tasks while working independently in a field-based environment. The role requires adherence to all applicable company quality, health and safety, field operations, installation, and commissioning standards, as outlined in CARMA’s policies and procedures. The Orientation Skills Requirement for all Trainees will be implemented, tests will be performed and graded before orientation training is complete. You will also clearly demonstrate your ability to work independently and perform all of the technical requirements found with each of the primary work responsibilities described below – Metering Technician Responsibilities. Critical to these responsibilities, is the requirement to complete assigned tasks successfully and on time.
Reporting:
The role reports directly to the National Field Service Manager, Multi-Residential or designate, who serves as the training mentor and is responsible for monitoring and reviewing performance goals, objectives, and weekly work schedules. The Metering Technician is required to complete the following reporting activities, including but not limited to:
- Submit weekly activity & expense reports by 5:00 pm Friday each week for the current week including, service work orders, submeter commissioning and accuracy inspection reports to the Supervisor; Commercial Systems, Toronto/ Supervisor; Residential Systems, Toronto and or Business Operations Support team (subject to change).
Important and Essential Duties:
The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Metering Technician Responsibilities
- Commission and verify utility submetering systems and perform related field activities across assigned projects;
- Verify and inspect the installation of electrical and mechanical submetering systems;
- Perform meter terminations in accordance with applicable electrical standards, safety requirements, and project specifications.
- Support project system design, configuration, equipment ordering, and preparation of as-built documentation;
- Manage equipment delivery, inventory control and return material authorizations (RMAs);
- Communicate with installing contractors regarding installation requirements, equipment deliveries and deficiency corrections;
- Provide customer training on CARMA and approved third-party products and services;
- Execute Customer Service Agreements in accordance with the defined scope of work (which may vary by project);
- Apply knowledge of data communication protocols, including networks and gateways, to project and system activities;
- Apply electrical fundamentals to support installation, verification, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
Experience/Knowledge/Ability
- Experience in submetering, electrical systems, or utility system installation and commissioning is an asset;
- Ability to work independently and perform all of the technical requirements and each of the primary work responsibilities outlined in the “Important and Essential Duties” section, of this document;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail;
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team;
- Electrical Knowledge is considered an asset.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in Electronics, Electrical, or Mechanical disciplines, or an Electrical Trade qualification;
- Knowledge of Microsoft office applications;
- A valid G class driver’s license, and proof of insurance coverage is required.
Working Conditions
- Work may be performed in a variety of settings, including electrical and mechanical rooms, meter rooms, confined spaces, construction sites, and office buildings;
- Exposure to environmental conditions such as dust, noise, temperature changes, and areas with limited ventilation, with all work performed in accordance with safety requirements;
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and lifting equipment up to 50 lbs;
- Use of hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and mobile devices;
- Work may require operating at heights and in restricted or tight areas; training will be provided for ladders and automated lift devices;
- Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and will be provided;
- Occasional work outside of regular office hours and occasional travel out of town may be required;

Starting salary is determined based on factors such as relevant experience, education, training, skills, certifications, and overall alignment with the position. Internal pay equity and market compensation data may also be considered. Final salary varies based on several considerations, and starting offers are usually below the top of the posted range.
