Job Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Substation Electrical Inspector to join our dynamic team. Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day field inspection and surveillance of substation electrical construction activities.
- Verify construction is completed in accordance with IFC drawings, specifications, approved work procedures, inspection and test plans, and applicable codes and standards.
- Inspect installation of major high-voltage equipment including:
- Power transformers and autotransformers
- Circuit breakers
- Disconnect and grounding switches
- Current transformers
- Capacitive voltage transformers / potential transformers
- Surge arresters
- Bus systems and associated connectors
- Insulators and support structures
- Station service transformers
- Neutral grounding equipment
- Reactors, capacitors and other primary equipment
- Inspect rigid and flexible bus installation, including alignment, clearances, conductor preparation, connector installation, bolt torque and equipment interfaces.
- Verify electrical equipment foundations, anchor locations, equipment orientation and mounting prior to final acceptance.
- Inspect grounding grid installations, grounding conductors, equipment bonding, exothermic connections, compression connections and ground risers.
- Verify cable tray, conduit, trench, duct bank and cable-routing installations.
- Inspect installation, identification and termination of:
- Control cables
- Protection cables
- Communication cables
- AC station service wiring
- DC control wiring
- Fibre-optic systems
- Review cable pulling, megger testing, continuity testing and termination records.
- Verify control building and protection panel installations.
- Inspect relay, protection, SCADA, metering and control wiring against approved drawings and schematics.
- Confirm equipment nameplates, phase identification, cable tags, terminal identification and equipment labeling are complete and accurate.
- Witness equipment assembly, installation and manufacturer-required field activities.
- Witness and document equipment testing as required by the project Inspection and Test Plans.
- Review contractor inspection records, test reports, torque records, equipment check sheets and quality documentation.
- Monitor preservation, storage and handling requirements for electrical equipment prior to installation.
- Identify construction deficiencies and non-conforming work.
- Initiate or support deficiency reports, NCRs, RFIs and field clarification processes as required.
- Track deficiencies through correction, reinspection and closure.
- Maintain accurate daily inspection reports, photographs and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate inspection activities with construction management, engineering, quality, commissioning, contractors and equipment manufacturer representatives.
- Participate in construction progress meetings, quality meetings, turnover meetings and commissioning coordination meetings.
- Review redline drawings and verify field changes are accurately captured for final as-built documentation.
- Support system turnover and mechanical completion walkdowns.
- Participate in pre-energization inspections and readiness reviews.
- Verify outstanding deficiencies are appropriately classified and resolved prior to energization.
- Assist the commissioning team with equipment turnover packages, test documentation and energization readiness.
- Maintain a strong field presence and immediately communicate conditions that could affect safety, quality, schedule or equipment integrity.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in construction inspection or electrical inspection roles within utility or energy infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, schematics interpretation, and electrical system design principles.
- Demonstrated analysis skills for evaluating data collected during inspections and testing procedures.
- Construction experience with a focus on substation or high-voltage electrical systems is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with quality control processes and construction safety regulations applicable to electrical infrastructure projects.
- Ability to perform detailed data collection accurately while maintaining attention to detail under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with engineers, contractors, and project managers effectively.
- Preference will be given to candidates with:
- Minimum 7–10 years of electrical construction, inspection, commissioning, maintenance or quality experience within substations or comparable high-voltage facilities.
- Strong experience with high-voltage substation construction, preferably including 230 kV and/or 500 kV facilities.
- Journeyperson Electrician, Powerline Technician, Electrical Engineering Technologist, Electrical Engineering Technician, electrical commissioning background, or equivalent combination of education and relevant field experience.
- Previous experience working as an Electrical Inspector, QA/QC Inspector, Electrical General Foreman, Electrical Superintendent, Commissioning Technician or similar senior field position.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret:
- Single-line diagrams
- Wiring diagrams
- Cable schedules
- Equipment arrangement drawings
- Grounding drawings
- Conduit and cable tray drawings
- Manufacturer drawings and manuals
- Strong understanding of electrical construction quality requirements.
- Experience reviewing Inspection and Test Plans and contractor quality documentation.
- Familiarity with deficiency management, NCRs, RFIs and turnover documentation.
- Strong written communication and field-reporting skills.Ability to work independently and make sound field decisions while maintaining effective relationships with contractors and project personnel.Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and electronic document-management / construction-management systems. Valid driver's licence.
Pay: $100,000.00-$175,000.00 per year
