Full job description

Assitant Controller (Retail Industry)

Our client, located in Toronto and surrounding areas, a customer driven company highlighted by its flagship business in retail is seeking to add a Assistant Controller to its team. The position reports directly to the Senior Accountant and provides direct interaction with senior management.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for assisting with the month end and general accounting. Specific responsibilities include:

Accounting

Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using QuickBooks accounting software.
Record daily sales, purchases, expenses, deposits, and other financial transactions.
Reconcile bank, credit card, debit card, and other payment accounts on a regular basis.
Reconcile daily sales reports against point-of-sale (POS) records and deposits.
Process accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Maintain organized electronic and paper records of receipts, invoices, bills, and other financial documentation
Monitor cash transactions and assist with daily cash reconciliation.

Inventory Accounting

Maintain accurate financial records relating to inventory, including purchases, transfers, sales, returns, and adjustments.
Reconcile inventory-related transactions between the POS system and accounting records.
Assist with reconciliation of vendor statements and inventory invoices.
Maintain accurate records for repairs, custom orders, deposits, and customer balances.
Assist management with periodic inventory counts and investigate discrepancies when required.
Ensure appropriate documentation is maintained for high-value purchases and transactions.

Payroll & Government Remittances

Assist with payroll processing and maintain accurate payroll records.
Prepare and/or coordinate applicable payroll remittances and filings.
Assist with HST/GST and other applicable tax reporting and remittances.
Maintain supporting documentation for tax filings and year-end accounting.
Assist the Senior Accountant to provide information and answer questions from the company's external accountant or CPA during month-end and year-end reporting.

Financial Reporting & Administration

Understand, review and analyze regular financial reports
Excel spreadsheet analysis and reporting
Provide management with accurate financial information to support business decisions.
Monitor expenses and identify unusual or inconsistent transactions.
Assist with budgeting and financial forecasting as required.
Maintain confidential financial and employee information.
Support management and external accountants with audits, reviews, and year-end requirements.

Internal Controls & Compliance

Follow established procedures for handling cash, deposits, refunds, discounts, and high-value transactions.
Maintain appropriate documentation and authorization for financial transactions.
Identify and report discrepancies, unusual transactions, or potential errors to management.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding customer, employee, vendor, and company financial information.
Ensure bookkeeping practices comply with applicable accounting, tax, and company policies.

Requirements:

To be considered for this Assistant Controlleropportunity,

· 5+ years of experience working as a full charge bookkeeper or in the month end reporting cycle with preferred experience in retail industry

· Experience using QuickBooks Online/Desktop or similar accounting software

· CPA designation, actively working towards a designation or qualified by experience, or qualified by experience

· College diploma or University degree

· Excellent written and verbal communications skills

· Strong experience and understanding of MS Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)

· Intermediate to advanced level MS Excel skills

· Highly organized with strong attention to detail
