Occupational Therapist – Psychopharmacology Clinic
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Psychopharmacology Clinic team. This outpatient clinic provides supports for children and youth with Autism and interfering behaviours. The clinic provides medical expertise with respect to medication management for behaviours. The team consists of prescribers (MD or NP), nursing, behaviour analyst, behaviour technicians, social work, clinical pharmacy. The role of the OT would be to support the team’s work through assessment, consultation, treatment, education and collaboration with team members and community providers.
The OT will work within a hybrid (virtual and in-person care) short-term, tiered model of care. Services may range from virtual education and consultation to targeted sensory processing screening and parent coaching, through to in-person individualized occupational therapy assessment and intervention.
The OT will also contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the integration of occupational therapy within the Psychopharmacology Clinic, supporting quality improvement and the development of an evidence-informed model of care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide occupational therapy services within a tiered model of care, including universal strategies consultation and education, targeted sensory processing screening and parent coaching, and individualized OT assessment and intervention.
- Document habilitative/rehabilitative process according to hospital and college policies/standards and evaluate care through outcome measures
- Provide parent/caregiver education and coaching related to sensory processing, regulation, environmental adaptations, routines and strategies to support participation in everyday activities.
- Address barriers to occupational participation, including those related to sensory processing differences, regulation, routines, environmental factors and functional daily living skills.
- Provide individualized recommendations addressing the interaction between the person, occupation and environment, with a focus on supporting meaningful participation at home, school and in the community.
- Demonstrate strong critical thinking/reasoning and utilize research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
- Practice according to organizational policies and standards of practice as set out by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and the policies, procedures and standards of care of Holland Bloorview.
- Interface and problem solve with members of the interprofessional care team and community providers as appropriate to ensure an integrated approach to care.
- Incorporate evaluative activities into professional practice to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective health care.
- Demonstrate well-developed critical thinking/reasoning and utilize research to establish and support evidence-informed practice.
- Utilize the teaching/learning process to provide education on various conditions, both formal and informal, to clients/families, colleagues, students, and other professionals within the organization and the community.
- Contribute to the hospital’s academic mission through student supervision and / or academic teaching and / or contribution to research.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives such as quality boards, supports the maintenance of a safe and healthy work environment and advances a culture of client/patient safety through work and daily practices.
- Document workload statistics according to the Ministry of Health.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy required or Masters degree in Occupational Therapy preferred
- Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario
- Membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists
- Knowledge of and previous experience (1-5 years) in occupational therapy assessment and treatment of children and youth with ASD
- Knowledge of and experience with occupational therapy assessment techniques, therapeutic skills, modalities and their applications
- Experience with current outcome measures (i.e. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Goal Attainment Scaling, etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities effectively and efficiently
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and in a solution focused manner with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team is essential
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development
- Experience with being a positive change agent and quality improvement initiatives is an asset
- Status appointment in the Department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at University of Toronto is an asset
