A great developmental opportunity to learn and grow as part of our Track & Structures team. We are seeking a Track Welder Trainee. This position reports out of Davisville Yard or Greenwood Yard, however working location will vary as dictated by work assignments.
You will be classified as a Track Welder Trainee for a period of up to 3 years during which time the applicable training will be given. Once you successfully complete the classroom and the on-the-job training will be classified as a Track Welder. You must remain in the classification for a period of 18 months with the ability to bid to higher classifications during this period.
As a trainee, you’ll step into an exciting hands-on role where you’ll gain experience with a wide range of electric and acetylene welding, cutting, and grinding techniques. Your work will take place across TTC properties — from the shop and yard to the subway system itself — giving you exposure to diverse environments and challenges.
You’ll learn specialized skills such as track bonding, CAD welding, and thermite welding operations, with opportunities to lead and support crews during critical trackwork projects. All training and tasks are guided by experienced supervisory staff, ensuring you build confidence and mastery every step of the way.
- Set up and operate cutting and welding equipment with precision.
- Apply multiple welding processes such as stick and oxy-acetylene.
- Work with a variety of metals
- Utilize metal fillers and air arc cutting equipment to achieve strong, reliable results.
- Fabricate jigs and devices that support track construction and maintenance.
- Perform advanced rail welding in subway systems using electric, oxy-acetylene, thermite, and CAD welding processes.
You will be part of a part of the process from start to finish which could include:
- Removing and replacing pavement around rail;
- Setting out track zone lights, flags and/or impassable track set ups.

- Training normally obtained through completion of Grade 12 education, technical programs, or the equivalent.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and published operating/safety rules and regulations.
- You currently have a valid, non-probationary, Province of Ontario class "G" driver's license or better in good standing, and able to pass the written and practical tests required for a class “DZ” driver’s licence.
- Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status.
- Must be respirator fitted and able to use respirators when required.
- Must have or rapidly acquire comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
