Position Summary
ZEAS Incorporated is seeking a motivated and detail orientedBiologist - Junior Aquatic Taxonomist to join our laboratory team in Nobleton, Ontario. This position is ideal for a recent graduate or early career professional with an interest in aquatic ecology, benthic macroinvertebrates, and environmental monitoring.
Working alongside experienced aquatic biologists and taxonomists, you will assist with sample processing, aquatic invertebrate identification, laboratory quality control, and fisheries-related biological analyses.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, log, and organize incoming benthic samples.
- Wash, sort, and process benthic samples according to established laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Identify aquatic macroinvertebrates using stereo microscopes and current taxonomic keys.
- Accurately record and maintain laboratory data and sample documentation.
- Estimate fish fecundity for a variety of freshwater fish species.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness, organization, and equipment.
- Follow laboratory QA/QC procedures to ensure accurate and consistent results.
- Work collaboratively with team members while managing assigned tasks independently.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A University degree or College diploma in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of aquatic macroinvertebrates and an interest in aquatic taxonomy.
- Experience using a stereo microscope.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to consistently meet laboratory QA/QC standards.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as within a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to perform microscope work for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- OBBN (Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network) Certification is considered a strong asset.
- Previous laboratory or aquatic ecology experience is an asset.
Compensation & Start Date
- Anticipated Start Date: September 2026
- Compensation: $20.00 per hour
