As our Downtown Community Foot Patrol Program continues to grow, we are seeking dedicated, professional, and community-minded individuals to join our team as Community Foot Patrol Officers.
Position Summary
Community Foot Patrol Officers serve as a highly visible presence throughout downtown Victoria, helping to promote safety, security, and community well-being. Officers patrol designated areas on foot, respond to service requests, conduct property checks, assist businesses and members of the public, and work collaboratively with emergency services when required.
This role combines proactive security, public engagement, conflict resolution, and community support. Successful candidates are approachable, professional, physically capable, and committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
The patrol area includes Fort Street, Yates Street, Government Street, Broad Street, Douglas Street, Blanshard Street, Pandora Avenue, View Street, and Johnson Street.
Key Responsibilities
Community Safety & Patrol
- Conduct regular foot patrols throughout assigned downtown areas.
- Maintain a highly visible presence to deter theft, vandalism, trespassing, loitering, and other undesirable activity.
- Identify and report safety hazards, maintenance concerns, and suspicious activity.
- Provide reassurance and support to businesses, residents, employees, and visitors.
Incident Response
- Respond promptly and professionally to service requests from clients, businesses, and members of the public.
- Investigate and address concerns involving disturbances, trespassing, suspicious behaviour, and public safety issues.
- Apply sound judgment and de-escalation techniques to resolve conflicts whenever possible.
- Contact emergency services or other appropriate agencies when necessary.
Property & Business Support
- Conduct routine exterior and interior property checks as assigned.
- Verify that doors, gates, windows, and access points are secure.
- Assist clients with security concerns and provide timely communication regarding incidents or observations.
- Maintain positive working relationships with business owners and staff throughout the patrol area.
Community Engagement
- Act as a professional ambassador for Themis Security and the Downtown Foot Patrol Program.
- Build positive relationships with local businesses, community organizations, residents, and visitors.
- Provide directions, assistance, and general information to members of the public.
- Support vulnerable individuals by connecting them with appropriate community resources when possible.
Reporting & Documentation
- Complete detailed and accurate incident reports, daily activity reports, and patrol logs.
- Utilize company reporting software, mobile applications, and checkpoint scanning systems.
- Document observations and incidents in a professional, objective, and timely manner.
Emergency Response
- Assist with medical emergencies until emergency responders arrive.
- Utilize Mental Health First Aid, Naloxone, and conflict de-escalation training when appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with VicPD, Bylaw Services, BC Emergency Health Services, and other community partners as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
Required
- Valid BC Security Worker Licence (must be carried while on duty).
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Completion of Toward the Heart Naloxone Training.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Professional appearance and customer service-oriented attitude.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
- Proficiency using smartphones and mobile applications for reporting and communication.
- Availability to work Monday, Wednesday, with additional availability as needed.
Assets
- Advanced Security Training (AST).
- Occupational First Aid certification.
- Mental Health First Aid certification.
- Previous experience in security, law enforcement, community safety, customer service, hospitality, outreach, or related fields.
- Training or experience in conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to walk continuously for a minimum of two consecutive hours.
- Ability to ascend and descend stairs as required.
- Ability to complete assigned patrol routes without assistance.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions
- Primarily outdoor work in downtown Victoria.
- Frequent interaction with businesses, residents, visitors, and vulnerable populations.
- Exposure to changing weather conditions.
- Evening, weekend, and holiday shifts may be required.
- Fast-paced environment requiring adaptability and professional judgment.
