POSTION: Legal Counsel

LOCATION: Millbrook or Eskasoni, Nova Scotia

CLOSING DATE: August 7, 2026

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Executive Director, Legal Counsel provides practical, strategic, and proactive legal
advice supporting the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs and KMK. This role is responsible
for reviewing and negotiating contracts, conducting legal research and analysis, supporting
governance and policy initiatives, managing organizational legal risk, and coordinating legal services
across a broad range of priorities. This role works collaboratively with internal teams, external legal
counsel, government partners, and stakeholders to support the implementation of KMK’s strategic
objectives and the protection of Mi’kmaw rights and interests.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES

Provides legal advice and strategic guidance on contracts, governance, regulatory compliance, risk
management, procurement, privacy, and organizational matters. Reviews, drafts, negotiates, and
manages a variety of legal agreements and provides practical advice regarding contractual
obligations and risk exposure. Conducts legal research and analysis, prepares briefing materials and
legal opinions for senior leadership and Chiefs, and supports the development of organizational
policies, procedures, and governance frameworks. Monitors emerging legal developments affecting
Indigenous organizations and works collaboratively with staff, communities, governments, and
external counsel to advance organizational priorities and build internal legal capacity.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.

Member in good standing of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, or a Canadian provincial or

territorial law society, with eligibility for immediate admission to the Nova Scotia Barristers'

Society.

Three to five years of legal experience.

Experience in contract law, corporate governance, administrative law, commercial transactions,

or risk management.

Strong legal research, analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to translate complex legal issues into practical business advice.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and meet deadlines.

Experience working with Indigenous organizations, governments, or communities is

considered a strong asset.

Knowledge of Mi’kmaq governance, treaty rights, and Indigenous legal issues is considered

an asset.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Must maintain membership in good standing with a Provincial or Territorial Law Society.

Valid driver's licence and ability to travel throughout Nova Scotia.

Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
