Job Description:
Through the Shop Manager, the mechanic will maintain and repair a fleet of gas and diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment in compliance within Provincially legislatively mandated guidelines.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
· Conduct regular maintenance, diagnosis, inspections and perform the appropriate repairs to vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to heavy trucks, snow plows/salters, plow trailer, bucket trucks, vacuum excavator trailer, light & medium duty vehicles, front-end loaders, tractors, sidewalk maintenance equipment, trailers/floats, trailer arrow boards/VMS, gas & diesel small engines/equipment, hydraulic & electrical attachments, etc. to ensure safe optimal operating conditions in accordance with Ministry of Transportation guidelines and legislative standards. Ensure overall effective, efficient, and safe condition of vehicles and equipment.
· Receive and review daily vehicle and equipment operator circle check sheets, review repair requests.
Make recommendations for repairs/maintenance and complete necessary work as required in a timely manner.
· Provide on-going coordination and scheduling for vehicle and equipment servicing, preventative maintenance plans, annual safety certificates, ensuring that all required documentation and detailed records are maintained for each vehicle and piece of equipment. Assist in the development of and comply with preventative maintenance checklists. Ensure that vehicles and equipment appearance is maintained.
· Maintenance and repair of onboard vehicle and equipment computerized systems, electrical systems, hydraulic and air brake systems.
· Coordinate and attend vehicle and equipment fleet field assistance to disabled/faulty vehicles and equipment as required.
· Complete small engine (e.g., chainsaws, lawn mowers, grass trimmers, etc.) maintenance and repair.
· Coordinate and manage repairs and replacements completed by external vendors.
· Identify, recommend purchases of parts and maintain all related stock and warranty components as needed to complete repairs in a cost-effective manner through procurement process.
· Update fleet inventories, fleet assessments, time, and parts allocation through electronic/computerized programs.
· Perform other related duties, as assigned, that are in accordance with job responsibilities and/or necessary departmental or corporate objectives.
Other Responsibilities
· Work in compliance with the Highway Traffic Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislation, regulations, statutes and departmental policies/procedures/practices and operational guidelines. Ensure that all necessary personal protective equipment (e.g., safety boots, hard hat, reflective vest, gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, etc.) are used and maintained in good condition.
· Proficient in comprehending instructions provided in various formats, including written, verbal, or visual, and skilled in reading and interpreting fleet/equipment related essential documents such as safety regulations, operating instructions, procedure manuals and schematic drawings.
· Assiststaff as required.
Minimum Requirements
· Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
· Valid Certification of Qualification in Automotive Service Technician (310S)
· Must have a valid class G drivers license, valid class DZ driver’s license considered an asset.
· Minimum 1-year licensed experience repairing and maintaining diesel/gas truck/vehicle/equipment fleet. Demonstrated experience in the maintenance and repair of onboard truck/vehicle and equipment computerized systems, electrical/electronic systems, diesel/gas hydraulic and air systems.
· Thorough working knowledge and experience of vehicle and heavy equipment operation, preventative maintenance techniques and repair methods, diesel engines, required equipment safety inspections procedures.
Position Assets
· Welding and body work techniques/methods and sound safety practices.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Knowledge of various related computer software’s such as Microsoft office and other asset management/reporting software’s.
· Ability to prioritize, coordinate and complete activities in an efficient timely manner, set goals and objectives and develop realist action plans.
· Ability to multi-task, cope with interruptions and work under pressure to meet multiple deadlines, exercise discretion and good judgment particularly when handling highly confidential/sensitive information. Possess a high level of initiative and personal integrity.
· Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Physical Demand
· Moderate physical effort including finger/hand dexterity, reaching, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, driving vehicles and lifting in the garage and/or at construction sites. Moderate physical effort on a regular basis with various duties. Required to lift up to 50lbs.
· Physical Environment: Working conditions are primarily indoors in a garage with limited exposure to outside elements (hot/cold). Limited exposure to wearing uncomfortable PPE, tight awkward workspace and vibrations, exposure to hazards including exposure to chemicals, fumes/gas/odors. Must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose and skin from irritation or infection. Frequent exposure to dust/direct, grease/oil, lack of workspace and loud / frequent noise.
· Work routinely outdoors in various weather conditions/ Shift work.
· Normal hours of work are forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a one (1/2) hour unpaid meal break. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary as there is the requirement for call-in responses for urgent matters/emergency breakdowns, or to work overtime as needed.
Pay: $33.00-$39.50 per hour
