Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Municipal Enforcement, the Community Peace Officer Level I is responsible for enforcing provincial statutes and municipal bylaws for the City of Fort Saskatchewan and investigating inquiries and public complaints including animal control.

Responsibilities

Include, but are not limited to:

Comply with and support Municipal Enforcement policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
Provide professional testimony in Court and prepare/produce evidence to support prosecutions.
Promote and enhance traffic safety and the Municipal Enforcement Traffic Safety Plan through conventional traffic enforcement, commercial vehicle enforcement and the use of driver feedback signs.
Conduct directed or pro-active bike, foot and vehicle patrols to enhance the security of the community.
Liaise and collaborate with RCMP Officers as part of joint or mutual investigations, or during enforcement of municipal and provincial laws.
Establish or maintain ongoing professional relations with the local Crown Prosecutors’ office, other provincial or municipal resources or agencies.
Conduct or contribute to public education related to the mandate of Community Peace Officer including law, animal welfare, responsible pet ownership, youth and/or adult traffic safety, bicycle safety, community standards and related matters.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a two (2) year Law Enforcement College Diploma or a University Degree in a related field, or possess equivalent experience in the law enforcement sector. They must have strong knowledge of Alberta legislation, municipal bylaws, and the justice system, and must be eligible for appointment as a Community Peace Officer Level 1 through Alberta Justice and Solicitor General. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in Municipal Enforcement or a related field is required. The candidate must hold current Radar/LIDAR certification, certification from the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association, and have a thorough understanding of RCMP protocols and systems. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities are essential. Candidates must also have successfully completed the PARE (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation) within the past six months. A valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license is required, and availability to work a variety of shifts is necessary.

This position is within the scope of C.U.P.E. Local 30, and as such, you will be required to adhere to the articles contained within the Collective Agreement. A current Driver’s Abstract will be required at the time of interview.

Hours of Work: 80 hours bi-weekly. Varying shifts; days, nights, and weekends

Duration: Immediately – January 15, 2027. (Possibility of extension)
