The Wolastoqey Tribal Council (WTCI) is a not-for-profit organization whose role is to provide capacity building opportunities for its five member communities within New Brunswick (Matawaskiye, Wotstak, Bilijk, Sitansisk and Welamukotuk), in the areas of: Health, Education, Training/Employment, Governance, Sports and Emergency Management. Our team’s mission is to support and empower communities by addressing needs through collaborative initiatives and culturally sensitive approaches.
Overview:
Reporting directly to the Nihkanatpat/Executive Director, the Director of Lifelong Learning provides strategic leadership for the development, delivery, and continuous improvement of education programs and services that advance lifelong learning for Wolastoqey communities. This role is an opportunity to shape the future of education by leading innovative initiatives that support learners at every stage of life, from early learning through post-secondary education, career development, language revitalization, and lifelong learning. The Director is responsible for fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement while ensuring programs are responsive to the evolving needs and priorities of Wolastoqey children, youth, families, educators, and communities.
Leading a multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals, the Director provides both strategic direction and operational oversight for the Education Department. Working closely with community leaders, government partners, educational institutions, and other stakeholders, the successful candidate will champion initiatives that strengthen educational outcomes, build organizational capacity, and create meaningful opportunities for present and future generations of Wolastoqey people. Job Responsibilities
· Provide strategic leadership for the vision, planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of lifelong learning initiatives that support Wolastoqey learners from early childhood through adulthood.
· Lead a multidisciplinary Education Department of approximately 11-15 professionals, fostering a collaborative team culture grounded in a wholistic wellness approach that supports teamwork, clear expectations, staff development, leadership growth, and quality service.
· Develop and implement departmental strategic plans, priorities, and annual work plans that align with WTCI's mission, organizational goals, and the educational priorities of member communities.
· Oversee the development, delivery, and evaluation of education programs and services, ensuring they are culturally responsive, community-driven, evidence-informed, and responsive to emerging needs.
· Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with member communities, Elders, educational institutions, government partners, Indigenous organizations, funders, and other key stakeholders to strengthen educational opportunities and outcomes.
· Provide sound financial stewardship by leading departmental budgeting, financial planning, resource allocation, reporting, and ensuring compliance with funding agreements and organizational policies.
· Identify and pursue new funding opportunities, leading the development of strategic proposals, grant applications, partnership agreements, and funding initiatives that support long-term sustainability and growth.
· Lead, mentor, recruit, and support departmental staff, fostering leadership development, succession planning, and a workplace culture grounded in respect, collaboration, and continuous learning.
· Monitor organizational and sector trends, legislation, policy developments, and leading practices in Indigenous education and lifelong learning to inform strategic decision-making and program innovation.
· Establish performance measures and evaluate program effectiveness using data, community feedback, and continuous improvement practices to maximize impact and accountability.
· Represent WTCI at regional, provincial, and national meetings, committees, and collaborative initiatives, serving as a trusted advocate for Wolastoqey education priorities.
· Collaborate with the Nihkanatpat/Executive Director and senior leadership team to advance organizational priorities, contribute to strategic planning, and strengthen cross-departmental initiatives that benefit member communities.
Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree in Education, Indigenous Studies, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field. A Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is considered an asset.
· 5 to 10 years of progressive leadership experience, preferably within Indigenous organizations, education, government, or the non-profit sector.
· Demonstrated experience leading teams, managing programs, budgets, and organizational priorities.
· Strong understanding of the lifelong learning continuum, from Early Years through adult education.
· Experience developing partnerships with First Nations communities, government, educational institutions, and community organizations.
· Experience securing funding through proposals, grants, and funding agreements.
· Strong leadership, communication, relationship-building, and strategic planning skills.
· Knowledge of Wolastoqey language, governance, culture, and communities is considered a strong asset.

· Travel to schools and communities within NB.
· The successful candidate must have a valid driver's licence and regular access to a vehicle.
· Candidates who currently hold elected political office are not eligible for consideration for this position.
Remuneration is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Wolastoqey Tribal Council Inc. offers competitive salary and benefits to our employees. The salary range for this position is $87,000.00 - $116,000.00. Working location is 35 Dedham Street, Sitansisk (Fredericton New Brunswick).
