Overview
We are seeking a skilled PLC Programmer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in programming logic controllers and experience in industrial maintenance. This role is essential for ensuring the seamless operation of our automated systems and machinery. The PLC Programmer will be responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining control systems that enhance productivity and efficiency within our manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and program functioning PLC and HMI for controlling assembly lines and stand-alone machinery
- Develop designs, documentation, and programs according to the scheduled timeline
- Evaluate all processes are working accordingly and perform I/O checks
- Integration and Debug control systems and equipment.
- Install & commission control systems locally on the shop floor or at customer sites when needed
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues as per customer requirements. Perform field service work as required on customer sites when needed
- Collaborate with various customers, designers, team leads, project managers, toolmakers & electricians to identify any problems to produce our customers with a completed functioning automation system
- Participate in regular project meetings to report progress and track engineering changes as well as identify any action items needed to maintain the project on time
- Develop, follow-up and resolve Control open issues list
- Identify potential improvements and provide solutions; ensure quality control
- Other miscellaneous duties as assigned
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Programming and Commissioning Automation Systems:
- Interpret detailed engineering drawings and specifications to configure safe and efficient control systems.
- Develop graphical user interfaces to visualize processes for operators.
- Configure programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and networks, including Profinet, Ethercat and Modbus.
- Support the creation of energy-efficient control strategies to optimize system performance.
- Assist in field commissioning of control systems and gain hands-on experience.
- Coordinate projects as required.
2. Service:
- Provide onsite and remote support for automation and control systems related to mechanical and electrical systems.
- Participate in on-call duties (rotating basis) to learn efficient troubleshooting under the guidance of senior programmers.
3. System Integration:
- Assist in the integration of controls, hmi, variable speed drives, and safety circuits.
4. Systems Diagnostics and Applications:
- Develop an understanding of building heating/cooling systems and central steam plants.
- Perform system diagnostics, startup, commissioning, and process improvement solutions.
5. Communication and Teamwork:
- Communicate effectively with customers and team members about project status and recommendations for system improvements or repairs.
- Collaborate with contractors and consultants to address and resolve issues promptly.
Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Instrumentation, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering Technology, with a minimum of 3 years of programming experience.
- Strong skills in computer programming and networking.
- Completion of Engineering Technologist Certification (CET) is an advantage.
- Foundational knowledge of PLC, HMI, system integration, and combustion or process control environments is beneficial.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills to meet deadlines effectively.
- Proven ability to analyze and resolve system-related issues.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build professional trust and credibility.
- Enjoys teamwork and demonstrates a willingness to learn and share new skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; fluency in additional languages is an asset.
- Capable of creating and delivering presentations and training sessions for other employees.
- Flexible and available to work overtime or irregular hours with minimal notice, based on operational requirements.
- Open to travel within Canada as needed.
