About the role
The Sanitation Technician plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant food manufacturing environment. This position is responsible for the cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of processing and packaging equipment to ensure the production of high-quality products that meet food safety and regulatory standards. The Sanitation Technician works independently and as part of a team to support operational excellence, food safety initiatives, and continuous improvement programs.
Key responsibilities
· Clean and sanitize processing equipment, production lines, and facility areas in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), food safety regulations, and company standards.
· Perform scheduled cleaning activities as outlined in the Master Sanitation Schedule.
· Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout all plant areas.
· Safely operate sanitation and cleaning equipment, including powered lifts, scissor lifts, power washers, foam applicators, steamers, compactors, floor scrubbers, vacuum systems, motors, and other specialized equipment.
· Demonstrate safe and effective operation of floor jacks, trash compactors, vacuum cleaners, and floor scrubbers.
· Follow proper lifting, carrying, and material-handling procedures; identify and report defective equipment and workplace hazards promptly.
· Report all workplace incidents, injuries, and safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
· Disassemble, clean, inspect, and reassemble machinery, pumps, bucket elevators, and other processing equipment.
· Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of productivity and attention to detail.
· Learn and execute allergen control and elimination procedures to prevent cross-contamination.
· Adhere to all safety, hygiene, and food safety procedures, including GMP requirements and sanitation protocols.
· Maintain and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by company policies and regulatory standards.
· Participate in safety training, team development programs, and plant-wide initiatives.
· Read and interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safely prepare, mix, and use chemical cleaning agents according to manufacturer guidelines.
· Assist with spill containment and cleanup activities as required.
· Support pest control initiatives by identifying and reporting signs of pest activity.
· Remove product waste and debris from production areas and dispose of materials appropriately.
· Follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and apply Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) training when required.
· Support continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S principles (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain).
· Handle, mix, and store sanitation chemicals safely and responsibly.
· Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
· Work mandatory overtime when operational requirements demand.
About you
· High School Diploma or equivalent.
· Ability to work independently and effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
· Strong commitment to safety, quality, and food safety standards.
· Previous sanitation experience in a food manufacturing or food processing environment.
· Aerial Lift Certification.
· Experience working with industrial cleaning equipment and sanitation chemicals.
Working conditions
· Ability to move freely throughout the entire production facility.
· Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 lbs.
· Regular exposure to manufacturing environments involving noise, heat, cold, dust, and moisture.
· Occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals and sanitizing agents.
· Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, climbing, and working at heights.
· Use of smell and visual inspection to verify cleanliness and sanitation standards.
· Regular work around moving mechanical equipment and machinery while following established safety procedures.
