Health and Safety Field Advisor (Kenora)

Full-time, Permanent

MCL is looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join their team. Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor will work in the field to serve as a resource for Health and Safety management, monitoring and administration for various projects. The successful candidate will be self-driven and safety-oriented and would be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities

· Provide technical assistance to office and field operations to ensure compliance with applicable provincial, and MCL environmental, safety, and health regulations;

· Anticipate the needs of clients and provide a high level of service by ensuring effective processes are in place and providing safety expertise to help facilitate health and safety decisions;

· Champion the health and safety initiatives, processes, procedures and monitor/coach for appropriate behaviours/attitudes;

· Work closely with MCL employees, supervisors, and managers to impart the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize process and occupational safety hazards;

· Conduct regular field visits to worksites to ensure health, safety, and environmental standards are maintained and enforced;

· Participate in Pre-Job, Daily Tailboard, and Weekly Safety Meetings while at job sites, with a specific focus on input/feedback on Job Hazard Analysis quality and completeness;

· Participate in planned inspections and make recommendations for improvement and mitigation;

· Perform administrative and clerical duties within the Health and Safety Department;

· Collect and communicate health and safety information back to MCL’s main office and Health and Safety Manager;

· Provide health and safety orientation and training;

· Participate in/support the Joint Health and Safety Committee;

· Track emerging regulatory changes, industry trends and issues for the purpose of making recommendations;

· Conduct compliance evaluations of equipment, structures, and work in progress to ensure that regulatory environmental, safety and health standards of MCL and all applicable codes are followed;

· Maintain safety documentation and records to meet regulatory requirements as well as to provide data for problem solving and decision making related to individual job health and safety performance;

· Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health programs, systems and procedures;

· Conduct required safety reporting, preparation of monthly safety statistics and trending, and present findings to management team;

· Liaise with contractors and management to ensure business needs are understood and met;

· Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project goals are adequately communicated; and

· Conduct periodic onsite safety audits and inspections of work being performed on projects to ensure safety standards and local regulations are followed by construction and inspection personnel at all times.

Skills and Qualifications

· Must possess and maintain a valid Class G driver’s license;

· Computer proficiency is required—must be comfortable working with Microsoft Office programs, especially Word and Excel;

· Technical competency and strong attention to detail;

· Ability to work independently, as well as work effectively in a team environment and collaboratively with other departments;

· Possess leadership skills to act as a role model, promoting a positive influence on the work of others through demonstration of technical expertise and effective interpersonal skills;

· Flexibility to adapt to all situations and work varied hours;

· Capable of multitasking, prioritizing, and working efficiently and reliably;

· Ability to anticipate work needs and follow through with minimum direction;

· Able to make decisions where only general policies and procedures are available requiring application of judgement and independent action;

· Able to learn quickly, open to change, and focused on continuous improvement;

· Dedicated to meeting expectations of internal and external stakeholders and building constructive and effective business relationships;

· Excellent written, verbal communication, and collaborative skills;

· Able to identify problems/issues, generate solutions, resolve conflict, and make sound decisions;

· Must have a good understanding of workplace health principles, industry best practices and standards, WSIB/WCB Claims Management, Environmental and Ontario and Manitoba’s Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, and Ontario’s Labour Laws; and

· Must have strong technical safety expertise (risk management, safety management systems, loss control management, hazard identification, incident investigations, emergency preparedness and response).

· Experience with the development of policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

· Most work will be performed in the field, with some work performed in an office environment.

· Must be willing and able to travel out of town (primarily in Northern Ontario and Manitoba) to perform work duties.

· Able to work outdoors in inclement conditions as required.

· Must be willing to periodically work at project sites for extended periods of time.

Education/Experience

· High school or equivalent (required);

· Post-secondary education in health and safety is an asset;

· Knowledge of Ontario, Manitoba, and OH&S Legislature;

· Previous construction and/or health and safety experience and knowledge is preferred.
