General Manager, Retirement Residence
Northern Ontario | Full-Time, On-Site | $85,000–$130,000
Plan A Senior Care Staffing and Recruitment is hiring on behalf of a well-established retirement living community in Northern Ontario. We're looking for a hands-on senior living leader who wants full ownership of a residence: its people, its performance, and its reputation. This requires permanent relocation to the community, relocation assistance can be provided if required.
The Person We Need
You've spent at least 3-5 years leading in retirement living, long-term care, or a hospitality environment with comparable complexity, and you know what it takes to run a multi-department operation well. You're comfortable owning a budget, you know Ontario's retirement home regulatory landscape (RHRA standards and the Retirement Homes Act) inside and out, and you lead people in a way that's steady and motivating rather than reactive. A related post-secondary credential is a plus, and experience across multiple sites or in a corporate structure will stand out. You'll need a valid driver's license and your own reliable transportation.
What the Job Actually Involves
Think of this role in three layers.
Running the building. You're the person accountable for everything that happens day to day, from care and dining to housekeeping, maintenance, recreation, and the front office. That means chairing management meetings, staying on top of performance data, keeping emergency plans current, and making sure the culture in the building stays centered on residents' dignity and choice.
Running the numbers. You own the annual budget and the monthly variance conversations that follow it. You're watching labour costs, approving spend, and making sure revenue and occupancy targets actually get hit, not just tracked. On the growth side, you're partnering with sales and marketing on tours and lead follow-up, watching what competitors are doing locally, and finding ways to keep suites full and turnover fast.
Running compliance, safety, and people. This is the part that can't slip. You're the primary contact when RHRA comes to inspect, and you're responsible for keeping the building's documentation, incident reporting, and staff training records genuinely audit-ready, not scrambled together beforehand. That extends to broader legislative obligations too:
- Residential Tenancies Act
- Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Employment Standards Act
- PHIPA and public health requirements
- AODA
- Fire Code
On the people side, you're coaching your department managers, staying close to staffing levels and retention, and handling employee relations issues directly rather than letting them fester. You'll also sit on the Joint Health and Safety Committee and keep an eye on infection prevention and incident trends.
Who You'll Be Talking To
Day to day, you're working closely with your Director of Care and your department leads across food services, environmental services, recreation, and sales, plus HR and finance. Outside the building, you're the face of the residence to residents and families, prospective residents and their families, RHRA and public health, local hospitals, community care partners, and referral sources.
How You'll Know You're Winning
Occupancy stays at or above target, inspections come back clean, your team sticks around and actually wants to be there, and the budget lands where it's supposed to. Just as important: when something goes wrong with a resident or a family, it gets handled with care and doesn't linger.
