Associate Editor
The editorial team at Cottage Life is looking for a mid-level editor with 5-7 years of experience producing exceptional lifestyle content for print and digital. The ideal candidate will be able to work independently handling substantive edits on features, columns, and front-of-book stories; developing content ideas and editorial packages for print and online; recruiting and assigning stories to writers; and participating in other aspects of the editorial process, including copyediting and proofreading. In addition to handling print stories, they’ll have sharp digital skills, in particular experience in newsletter strategy and production, and thorough knowledge of Mailchimp. They’ll also be a WordPress wizard and understand the importance of SEO, with experience using tools to optimize content.
Ideally, we are looking for a cottager or someone with deep cottage experience, but most importantly, the successful candidate will understand what is so special about cottage living in Canada and have big ideas about how to make our magazine feel fresh and relevant to our audience of cottagers and cottagers-to-be. Since we want our stories to offer both good advice and a good read, they’ll also have a sense of fun and a lively imagination. A flexible, can-do attitude is a must, as is the ability to problem solve and find solutions in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
This new role will report to the Co-Publisher & VP, Content, Cottage Life and is a hybrid position requiring in-office attendance at our head office in Toronto for a minimum of three (3) days per week.
The anticipated salary range for this role is $57,000 - $62,000 per year, with final compensation determined by experience and qualifications.
Core Responsibilities & Duties
- Researching and developing story ideas for print and digital
- Contributing to pitch and strategy meetings
- Act as the handling editor, championing stories, including profile features, service stories, and front-of-book pieces, through each stage of the editing process from assigning to sign off
- Copy editing and packaging digital stories using SEO best practices for cottagelife.com
- Writing and curating a weekly newsletter
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 to 7 years of editing experience at a print magazine, preferably in lifestyle, or in digital editorial
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Journalism, English, or a related field
- Strong writing/editing skills
- A track record of managing freelancers
- Fluency with InCopy, Google Docs, Mailchimp, and WordPress
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
- Proficiency with digital platforms and social media
- Fact checking experience an asset
- Strong editorial judgement
- Passion for Canadian magazines, digital publishing, and journalism
