Nova Scotia Community Living Organizations is a coalition of service providers from all across Nova Scotia who support people with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and/or mental health support needs to live good lives in their communities. NSCLO works to strengthen the ability of member agencies to pursue excellence in community-based service. The Position:
The role of the Safety Navigator is to support NSCLO, member organizations, and the sector at large in areas of Occupational Health and Safety. This position will report directly to the Executive Director and will also work alongside direct service provider organizations, serve on the Board Safety Committee, sit on a variety of other safety-related working groups, and attend NSCLO related meetings and training as required.
This is a one-year contract term beginning once the candidate starts with the potential for renewal.Benefits and a paid time off package are included with this position.
This is a remote position but applicants must live in Nova Scotia. Travel to/from locations throughout the province is required and travel is compensated.
The “Human Rights Review and Remedy for the Findings of Systemic Discrimination Against Nova Scotians with Disabilities” guides the work of NSCLO. All applicants are expected to be familiar with “The Remedy” and adhere to a philosophy of a human-rights based approach to supporting people with disabilities.

· Engages and supports service providers to be in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Act and Regulations.
· Provides OH&S expertise related to the disability support sector to NSCLO, service providers, and with safety partners.
· Implements an approach to increase employer awareness and engagement regarding knowledge of OH&S resources for our sector.
· Audits resources available to ensure they meet the sector’s needs.
· Sits on safety related committees and working groups as a sector advocate.
· Collects data related to safety concerns in the sector to inform committee and advocacy work.
· Attends meetings both virtually and in-person at locations across the province.
· Organizes, participates in, and/or facilitates professional development opportunities related to OH&S for the sector.
· Supports the Executive Director and committees by conducting research to support policy
review/changes, ensuring members have relevant links and references to support their policy
updates.
· Supports organizations to create best practices in workplace safety culture
· Other duties as designated by the Executive Director.
Qualifications
· OH&S certificate, diploma or a degree is preferred. A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
· A fulsome understanding of the needs, challenges, and resources available to the disability support sector in Nova Scotia is preferred.
· Intermediate skill level working with online meeting platforms including, but not limited to, Zoom, Teams, Google.
· Excellent organizational and time management skills.
· Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
· Highly effective interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment.
· High degree of initiative and ownership over work.
· Intermediate skill level in Excel, Word, Power Point.
· Ability to work in an inclusive manner with a diverse population, both inside and outside the
association.
Special Conditions of Employment
· Must provide a current and valid Criminal Background Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
· Access to a safe, confidential, and dedicated work space in your home as well as reliable high-speed internet is required. A home workspace safety checklist will be completed on hire.
· Access to safe and reliable transportation to travel to/from meeting locations on occasion is required. These meetings can occur in various locations throughout the province and may include overnight stays.
· NSCLO values work life balance and offers some flexibility in work schedules. Details can be discussed and negotiated upon hire.
· As stated above, only applicants currently living in Nova Scotia will be considered for this position. Though it is remote, all work must be done in NS.
Pay: $78,000.00-$82,000.00 per year
