Reporting to the General Manager, the Environmental Services Manager is responsible for overseeing and executing the maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of Brighton Retirement Living’s physical environment, including buildings, equipment, and grounds. This role ensures that the facility remains safe, operational, and comfortable for residents, staff, and visitors, while also meeting regulatory and compliance standards for senior living facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Maintenance
1.1. Maintaining the building and grounds in good operating condition.
1.2. General repairs to buildings, equipment and furnishings.
1.3. General decorating of rooms and other areas including painting, wallpapering and surface repairs.
1.4. Maintaining the effectiveness of building mechanical, electrical and fire detection and safety systems.
1.5. Making minor adjustments to the building mechanical, electrical and fire systems as deemed necessary.
1.6. Routine surveillance of grounds including parking lots.
1.7. Maintain the grounds in a neat and tidy fashion.
1.8. Maintain a high level of safety and security for residents, staff, visitors and guests.
1.9. Maintain the preventative maintenance program.
2. Administration
2.1. Selection and acquisition of maintenance supplies and their efficient, effective and safe use.
2.2. Keep records on building utilities consumed, repairs and adjustments made.
2.3. Acquire and maintain files of operating manuals and other data pertaining to all furnishings and equipment.
2.4. Maintain an adequate inventory of maintenance supplies for day-to-day use.
2.5. Maintain security of the building, contents, and the well-being of the residents.
2.6. Selection and recommending the acquisition of maintenance equipment and the storage of same.
2.7. Helping in the preparation of an annual operating and capital budget and working within these budgets for those functions under the jurisdiction of the department.
2.8. Participate in supervisory meetings and foster cooperative interactions between other supervisory staff.
3. Risk Management and General Safety
3.1. Partners with community team to ensure community is in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements and promotion of Risk Management programs and/or policies, adherence to safety rules and regulations.
3.2. Practices safety procedures at all times including personal protective equipment (PPE), fire safety procedures (extinguishers), safety data sheets (SDS), and lockout tagout procedures.
3.3. Reports all accidents and/or incidents immediately.
3.4. Reports all unsafe and hazardous conditions and/or equipment immediately.
3.5. Complies with all infection control techniques, placement of biohazard containers and removal techniques, procedures and policies.
3.6. Participates in fire safety and mock disaster procedures.
4. Other
4.1. Works in a safe manner and ensures department operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, Mistral Group of Companies policies, procedures, and other associated legislation.
4.2. Other related duties, as assigned.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Education
- Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
License, Registration, Training and Clearances
- Police Record Check (per RHA), including Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
- Valid and unrestricted Class “G” Driver’s License
- Immunization and Tuberculosis (TB) testing, per Brighton Retirement Living’s policy.
- Training with repair trades including electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, etc. considered an asset.
Experience
- Five (5) or more years of experience in facility maintenance, preferably in healthcare or senior living environment.
- Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory or management role.
- Previous experience with outdoor maintenance including yard clean-up/maintenance, snow removal, general inspections, etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledgeable of building systems (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, fire safety, etc.).
- Familiar with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and preventative maintenance practices.
- Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills.
- Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate with residents and their families.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Customer service oriented.
- Experience in managing operating and capital budgets.
- Ability to demonstrate understanding and empathy for the needs of seniors.
- Demonstrated positive, co-operative and helpful attitude.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
