Position Summary
The Abilities Management and Wellness Specialist is an integral member of the Occupational Health, Safety and Wellness team and is responsible for supporting the health, safety, and wellbeing of team members through the delivery of occupational health, disability management, workplace accommodation, and return to work programs.
Working collaboratively with leaders, team members, union partners, healthcare providers, and external agencies, the incumbent coordinates team members health services and facilitates safe and timely return to work outcomes while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, collective agreements, benefit plans, and hospital policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate disability management services for occupational and non-occupational illness and injury, including WSIB, short-term disability, long-term disability, and accommodation cases.
- Review and interpret medical information, functional abilities documentation, and other supporting information to determine appropriate workplace accommodations.
- Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individualized return to work and accommodation plans in collaboration with team members, leaders, union representatives, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate referrals for Functional Abilities Evaluations, Independent Medical Examinations, Ergonomic Assessments, Occupational Health Physician assessments, and other assessments as required.
- Monitor team members progress and adjust accommodation plans as appropriate.
Act as the primary liaison with WSIB, disability insurance providers, rehabilitation consultants, and healthcare professionals.
- Maintain accurate documentation, case records, and reporting while identifying trends and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Support the administration and coordination of occupational health activities related to infection prevention, communicable disease management, and outbreak response in collaboration with Infection Prevention and Control.
- Participate in infection prevention and outbreak management activities in collaboration with Infection Prevention and Control.
- Provide health education and promote workplace wellness initiatives.
Refer team members to the Occupational Health Physician or other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
- Provide guidance to leaders and team members regarding disability management, accommodation, attendance, occupational health, and wellness programs.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of occupational health policies, procedures, medical directives, and best practices.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and best practice changes related to occupational health and disability management.
- Ensure all team members health information is managed in accordance with privacy legislation and professional standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned by program leadership
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Health Sciences, Disability Management, Rehabilitation Sciences, Occupational Health & Safety, or another related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience.
- Current registration with a relevant regulated health profession (where applicable) is considered an asset.
- Professional certification in Disability Management, Return to Work, Occupational Health, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field is preferred (e.g., CDMP, CRTWC, CRSP, CHSC, COHN(C)) or willingness to obtain.
- Current First Aid and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required.
- Respiratory Protection (N95 Fit Testing) Trainer certification is considered an asset.
- Specialized education in Infection Prevention and Control is considered an asset.
Experience:
- Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in occupational health, disability management, return to work, workplace accommodation, rehabilitation, employee health, or a related field.
- Experience working within healthcare or another complex, unionized environment is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating complex disability and accommodation cases involving multiple stakeholders.
- Experience interpreting medical information, functional abilities, and workplace restrictions.
- Experience administering WSIB, disability management, attendance support, and accommodation programs.
- Experience delivering employee health programs, including health surveillance, immunization, communicable disease management, respiratory protection, or wellness initiatives is considered an asset.
- Experience collaborating with healthcare providers, disability insurers, unions, and leaders to achieve successful return to work outcomes.
