About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, the Mortgage Underwriter will be responsible for reviewing and assessing mortgage applications, analyzing risk, and supporting brokers throughout the lending process.
This role is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, solutions-focused, and confident balancing customer service with sound underwriting practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, analyze, and assess residential and construction mortgage applications
- Verify income, assets, credit, and supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy
- Evaluate applications in accordance with underwriting guidelines, policies, and risk tolerance
- Identify, investigate, and escalate any potential fraud, misrepresentation, or unusual activity
- Communicate mortgage decisions, conditions, and required documentation clearly and professionally
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and referral partners through responsive communication and support
- Work collaboratively with administration, fulfillment, legal, and funding teams to ensure smooth closings
- Meet service level agreements and turnaround expectations in a high-volume environment
- Contribute to portfolio quality, operational efficiency, and team success
Qualifications & Experience
- 3+ years of experience in mortgage underwriting, lending, or credit adjudication
- Strong understanding of residential mortgage underwriting and risk assessment
- Experience with private lending and/or construction financing is considered an asset
- Post-secondary education in Business, Commerce, Finance, or a related field is preferred
- Mortgage Agent Licence or completion of the Mortgage Agent Course is considered an asset
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills
- Strong analytical skills with sound judgment and attention to detail
- Ability to prioritize effectively and thrive in a fast-paced environment
