Job description
Teacher - (Full-time, permanent)
Helping young people rediscover their potential!
We are seeking a creative, innovative, skilled, and compassionate Teacher to join our team and help young people reconnect with learning and build confidence in their abilities. We believe that every young person can learn, grow, and succeed when they have the right relationships, opportunities, and support around them.
This is a unique teaching opportunity for an educator who understands that one size does not fit all. Our students may have learning disabilities or other exceptionalities, behavioural challenges, significant gaps in learning, interrupted educational experiences, or negative experiences with school. The successful candidate will be able to meet students where they are, build trusting relationships, identify their strengths, and develop engaging learning experiences that help them move forward.
The Role
The Teacher will provide a combination of individualized instruction and small-group learning experiences, adapting curriculum, teaching strategies, and learning environments to meet a wide range of needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing individualized academic support to young people with diverse learning needs and exceptionalities.
- Developing and delivering engaging, creative, and meaningful learning experiences for small groups.
- Assessing students' strengths, needs, interests, and learning gaps and using this information to guide instruction.
- Adapting curriculum, resources, and teaching approaches to accommodate different learning styles, abilities, and levels of readiness.
- Supporting students who may experience learning disabilities, behavioural challenges, executive functioning difficulties, gaps in foundational skills, or other barriers to learning.
- Creating a safe, inclusive, flexible, and welcoming learning environment where students feel respected and capable.
- Building positive, trusting relationships with young people and helping them develop confidence, self-awareness, independence, and a sense of achievement.
- Using innovative and hands-on approaches to engage students who may have struggled in traditional educational settings.
- Developing individualized learning goals and tracking student progress.
- Collaborating with colleagues, caregivers, schools, and other professionals involved in supporting each young person, as appropriate.
- Using creativity and professional judgment to find new ways to engage students and make learning relevant to their lives and goals.
- Maintaining appropriate documentation and contributing to ongoing planning and evaluation of student progress.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an educator who is both highly skilled and highly adaptable — someone who can move comfortably between one-to-one instruction and facilitating an engaging group learning experience.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A Bachelor of Education and current teaching certification in Newfoundland and Labrador. Additional education in Special Education would be an asset.
- Experience working with young people with diverse learning needs and exceptionalities, in an educational setting.
- Experience working with young people in care, preferably in group care.
- Demonstrated experience adapting instruction and curriculum to individual learners.
- Strong knowledge of differentiated instruction, inclusive education, and evidence-informed teaching practices.
- Experience supporting students with learning disabilities, behavioural challenges, developmental differences, or significant gaps in learning.
- Strong classroom and behaviour-management skills grounded in positive, relationship-based approaches.
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- A demonstrated ability to build authentic and respectful relationships with youth.
- Creativity, flexibility, patience, and a willingness to try new approaches.
- The ability to recognize and build on a young person's strengths rather than defining them by their challenges.
- A willingness to work flexible hours based on the needs of the young people.
You Might Be a Great Fit If You...
- Believe that every young person is capable of learning.
- See behaviour as communication and approach challenges with curiosity rather than judgment.
- Can make a lesson engaging even when a student initially has no interest in learning.
- Enjoy finding unconventional solutions to educational challenges.
- Are comfortable adapting your plans when a young person's needs change.
- Understand the importance of relationships, trust, safety, and consistency in education.
- Can balance high expectations with compassion, flexibility, and understanding.
- Are energized by working with students who don't always fit neatly into traditional educational systems.
- Want your teaching to have an impact that extends beyond academic achievement.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and cover letter outlining your experience working with diverse learners and your approach to supporting young people who have experienced challenges in education.
