Full job description

Makivvik, the trusted political organization with a rich history of representing the Inuit of Nunavik since 1978. Through Makivvik and our subsidiaries, Makivvik has created opportunities for Nunavik Beneficiaries and those who live in Nunavik, today more than 500 Nunavimmiut are employed within the Makivvik network in our offices and subsidiaries.

Makivvik Corporation is supporting the development of a new trauma-informed, culturally safe, Inuit-specific shelter for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

Located in central Montreal, the shelter aims to address critical gaps faced by Inuit individuals in accessing safe and stable housing during times of crisis.

The shelter will provide wraparound services with a strong focus on safety, healing, and reconnection to culture and community.

As part of this initiative, a new non-profit organization may be established to oversee the shelter and future urban-based services. Please note that employees of the shelter may become a part of this newly created entity under Makivvik.

Responsibilities

Oversee intake processes, including risk assessments and safety planning
Provide clinical supervision and guidance to frontline staff
Lead case conferencing for complex and high-risk situations
Ensure Individual Support Plans (ISPs) are comprehensive, culturally responsive, and regularly reviewed
Support child-focused assessments and coordinate with youth protection services as required
Act as Deputy to the Shelter Director and assume leadership responsibilities in their absence
Support staff scheduling and day-to-day operational coordination in a 24/7 environment
Liaise with external partners, including hospitals, youth protection, law enforcement, courts, and community organizations
Support reintegration and transition planning for women and children
Collaborate closely with Cultural Liaison staff to align clinical and cultural supports
Oversee case documentation and data collection processes
Contribute to reporting requirements, including funder reports and outcome tracking
Identify service gaps and support continuous quality improvement initiatives
Assist in the implementation of organizational strategic priorities
Be available to travel, as requested.
Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work (or equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and experience)
4–6 years of professional experience in social services or a related field
Strong clinical assessment and crisis intervention skills
Experience supporting individuals impacted by gender-based violence, with a trauma-informed approach
Background working in women’s shelters, crisis centers, child protection, or GBV-focused services
Demonstrated leadership experience, including team supervision, scheduling, and operational coordination
Proven ability to manage complex cases involving women and children
Expertise in risk assessment and safety planning, particularly in high-risk domestic violence situations
Familiarity with youth protection systems, family courts, and the criminal justice system
Knowledge of Indigenous cultural safety principles; experience working with Inuit communities is strongly preferred
General to moderate knowledge of Traditional Inuit knowledge
Strong documentation, reporting, and case management skills
Ability to work effectively in a 24/7 operational environment and respond to crises as needed
Commitment to culturally grounded practice and collaboration with Cultural Liaison staff and Elders
Proficiency in Inuktitut is considered a strong asset
Security clearance is required.
