The Family Law Paralegal will support lawyers and the family law team with file management, client communication, document preparation, court materials, scheduling, and administrative coordination. This position requires strong attention to detail, good judgment, emotional maturity, and the ability to manage sensitive information with care and confidentiality.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Family Law Paralegal will be responsible for:
- Supporting lawyers and the family law team with the management of family law files from intake through resolution.
- Preparing, drafting, formatting, and proofreading legal documents, correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, briefs, forms, and court materials.
- Organizing and maintaining client files using legal practice management software, including Clio or other systems used by the office.
- Tracking court dates, deadlines, filing requirements, client tasks, and follow-up items to ensure matters move forward in a timely and organized way.
- Communicating with clients in a professional, compassionate, and clear manner.
- Gathering information from clients, witnesses, and other parties as needed to assist with file preparation.
- Supporting lawyers with preparation for court appearances, case conferences, judicial conferences, motions, and trials.
- Conducting legal and procedural research as required.
- Reviewing documents for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and compliance with court requirements.
- Logging calls, emails, tasks, and important file activity accurately and consistently.
- Assisting with scheduling, client appointments, phone calls, emails, and general file administration.
- Working collaboratively with lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, and operations staff to support an organized and professional legal environment.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality and exercising discretion in all client and workplace matters.
Qualifications and Skills
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience in a family law practice, legal office, or related legal environment.
- Strong drafting, proofreading, writing, and document management skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple files, deadlines, and priorities.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow through on tasks.
- Professional communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clients who may be stressed, emotional, or overwhelmed.
- The ability to remain calm, respectful, and solution-focused in challenging situations.
- Comfort using legal practice management software, Microsoft Office, Adobe, and other office technology.
- Experience with Clio, legal filing systems, court forms, and family law processes is considered an asset.
- The ability to work independently while also contributing positively to a team environment.
- A strong understanding of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and the sensitive nature of family law matters.
- A willingness to receive feedback, learn, adapt, and contribute to continuous improvement.
