About the Role
The Infracon Group of Companies is seeking experienced Grademen / Gradepersons for upcoming and potential municipal infrastructure and civil construction projects across Western Canada.
We are expecting awards on several municipal infrastructure projects with significant underground utility, pipe, road grading, curb and gutter, sidewalk, drainage, and civil construction components. As a result, we are looking to connect with skilled grade-focused field personnel who can support accurate layout, grade checking, pipe installation, roadwork, and site preparation.
This role is best suited for someone with strong municipal and civil construction experience who understands grades, slopes, offsets, stakes, pipe lasers, levels, and basic field layout. The successful candidate will work closely with Foremen, Pipe Foremen, surveyors, excavator operators, pipe layers, labourers, inspectors, and project teams to help ensure work is completed accurately, safely, and to specification.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working in active construction environments, can communicate clearly with equipment operators and field crews, and takes pride in helping maintain quality and production through accurate grade control.

Key Responsibilities
Grade Control & Field Layout Support
- Read and interpret grade stakes, hubs, offsets, markings, plans, profiles, and field direction
- Check and communicate grades, slopes, elevations, offsets, trench depths, pipe inverts, and finished surfaces
- Use pipe lasers, levels, grade rods, string lines, measuring tools, and basic layout equipment to support accurate construction
- Support pipe crews, operators, and foremen with grade information during excavation, pipe installation, backfill, road grading, and surface preparation
- Confirm trench grades, pipe bedding elevations, road subgrades, ditch grades, curb grades, sidewalk grades, and drainage slopes as required
- Identify grade conflicts, design concerns, layout issues, or field discrepancies and report them promptly to supervision
- Help reduce rework by checking grades early and communicating clearly with crews
Municipal Infrastructure & Civil Construction Support
- Support municipal underground utility work, including sewer, water, storm, drainage, manholes, catch basins, culverts, hydrants, valves, and service connections
- Assist with road construction, grading, curb and gutter, sidewalk preparation, drainage, surface restoration, and general civil construction activities
- Work closely with Pipe Foremen, Civil Foremen, surveyors, excavator operators, pipe layers, labourers, inspectors, and subcontractors
- Support efficient sequencing of work between pipe installation, backfill, compaction, grading, concrete, paving, and restoration activities
- Help ensure work is completed according to drawings, specifications, grades, and project requirements
- Adapt to changing project requirements, site conditions, weather, and operational priorities
Pipe Crew & Equipment Support
- Provide grade information and direction to excavator operators and pipe crews during trenching, bedding, pipe installation, and backfill
- Assist with checking pipe alignment, slope, inverts, bedding depth, and trench preparation
- Communicate clearly with operators, spotters, pipe layers, and foremen to support safe and accurate work
- Work safely around excavators, loaders, compactors, trucks, trench boxes, shoring systems, utilities, and workers on foot
- Support setup and use of pipe lasers, levels, and measuring equipment
- Help maintain safe, organized, and productive work areas
Tools, Materials & Site Organization
- Use hand tools, measuring tools, pipe lasers, levels, grade rods, compactors, and small equipment safely and effectively
- Assist with staging and organizing materials, tools, stakes, pipe, fittings, bedding, and construction supplies
- Support daily setup, shutdown, housekeeping, and work area organization
- Inspect and report issues with tools, layout equipment, grade equipment, or materials
- Maintain clean and safe access routes, work zones, trench areas, and material staging areas
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company, client, and project safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices
- Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, field-level hazard assessments, inspections, and site orientations
- Use required personal protective equipment at all times
- Maintain strong awareness around trenches, excavations, heavy equipment, traffic, utilities, shoring, slopes, and changing site conditions
- Follow site-specific traffic management, excavation, trenching, shoring, and confined space requirements
- Identify and report hazards, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, utility concerns, and environmental issues
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safe production, quality, teamwork, and professional conduct
What You Bring
- Strong experience as a Grademan, Gradeperson, Pipe Layer, Civil Labourer, or related role in municipal infrastructure or civil construction
- Solid understanding of grades, slopes, offsets, elevations, pipe inverts, road subgrades, and drainage requirements
- Experience using pipe lasers, levels, grade rods, string lines, measuring tools, and basic layout equipment
- Ability to read and understand grade stakes, markings, plans, profiles, and field direction
- Experience supporting sewer, water, storm, drainage, manhole, road grading, curb and gutter, sidewalk, or surface restoration work
- Ability to work safely around excavators, loaders, compactors, trucks, shoring systems, traffic, and workers on foot
- Strong communication skills and ability to provide clear grade information to operators and crews
- Strong attention to detail and pride in accurate work
- Reliable, punctual, and willing to travel for project-based work
- Safety-focused attitude with the ability to work as part of a coordinated civil construction team
Qualifications
- Previous municipal or civil construction experience is required
- Experience as a Grademan, Gradeperson, Pipe Layer, Civil Labourer, Survey Assistant, or similar field role is preferred
- Experience with sewer and water, storm systems, drainage, roadworks, curb and gutter, sidewalk, utilities, or earthworks is strongly preferred
- Experience working with pipe lasers, levels, grade rods, grade stakes, slopes, offsets, and pipe alignment is strongly preferred
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable transportation are preferred
- Ground Disturbance, CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid, Confined Space, or other safety certifications are considered assets depending on project requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, shovel, rake, climb in and out of trenches, walk on uneven ground, and perform physical work throughout the shift
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
- Ability to travel to project locations throughout Western Canada as required
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
- Drug and alcohol testing may be required depending on client, site, or project requirements
Working Conditions
- Project-based work in various locations throughout Western Canada

- Work will primarily support municipal infrastructure, civil construction, roadwork, underground utility, drainage, and earthworks projects
- Outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, dust, mud, and uneven terrain
- Exposure to active equipment, traffic, noise, trenches, excavations, utilities, shoring, slopes, tools, and changing site conditions
- Physically active role requiring standing, walking, lifting, carrying, shovelling, climbing in and out of trenches, and repetitive tasks
- Shift schedules, rotations, overtime, and travel requirements may vary by project
- Living out allowance, travel, or other project-specific arrangements may apply depending on location and project terms
Compensation & Benefits
- Wage range of $30.00 – $36.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
