Planner/Dispatcher
Job Type: Full-Time
Location: Caledonia, Ontario
Keep the Wheels Turning
Transport Sales & Service (TSS)
Caledonia, ON
You already know how this works.
You know that the plan you built at 8:00 a.m. may be completely irrelevant by 10:30.
A driver is delayed. A customer changes an appointment. A truck goes down. A load gets cancelled. A backhaul suddenly becomes available. Somebody needs something moved yesterday.
And somehow, you still have to get the freight delivered.
If you are an experienced transportation professional who enjoys solving problems, making decisions and keeping an operation moving when the plan inevitably changes, we want to hear from you.
Transport Sales & Service (TSS) is an Ontario-based trucking company specializing in heavy flatbed and bulk transportation. We are looking for an experienced Planner / Dispatcher to join our operations team and take an active role in coordinating our daily trucking operations.
This Is Not an Entry-Level Dispatch Position
We are looking for someone who understands the realities of trucking.
You know that:
- A truck is not actually available simply because the computer says it is;
- A driver may be technically “empty” but still be three hours from the next pickup;
- A delivery appointment is not a suggestion;
- A good backhaul can make the difference between a profitable truck and an expensive one;
- The best plan is useless if it cannot actually be executed; and
- Sometimes the best solution is the one that keeps the least number of people unhappy.
This is a hands-on operations role for someone who can take information, make decisions and keep moving.
What You Will Do
- Plan and coordinate daily truck and trailer movements;
- Dispatch company drivers and Owner Operators;
- Assign equipment and drivers to customer requirements;
- Coordinate pickups, deliveries, appointments and changing customer requirements;
- Monitor loads and proactively manage delays and disruptions;
- Maximize equipment utilization and minimize empty miles;
- Identify and coordinate backhauls and additional revenue opportunities;
- Communicate directly with drivers, Owner Operators, customers and internal departments;
- Coordinate with Maintenance when equipment issues affect operations;
- Adjust plans quickly when equipment, drivers, freight or customers do not cooperate;
- Maintain accurate operational information in the company's TMS and related systems;
- Assist with short- and medium-term planning; and
- Contribute to improving the efficiency and profitability of the operation.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate will have:
- Several years of experience in trucking dispatch, transportation planning or logistics operations;
- A strong understanding of the North American trucking industry;
- Experience planning and coordinating multiple trucks and loads simultaneously;
- Excellent geographical knowledge of Ontario and the Great Lakes region;
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills;
- The ability to prioritize competing demands;
- Strong communication skills;
- The ability to work independently and take ownership of decisions;
- Good computer skills and experience with transportation management systems; and
- The ability to remain calm, professional and productive when things go sideways.
Experience with heavy flatbed, multi-axle equipment, bulk transportation, grain hauling or Owner Operator operations would be a significant asset.
The Person We Are Looking For
You do not need to be told what a BOL, a delivery appointment, a backhaul or an hours-of-service problem is.
You understand that transportation is a constantly moving puzzle.
You know when to hold a truck, when to move it, when to call the customer, when to call the driver—and when to stop trying to make a bad plan work and start building a better one.
You are comfortable making decisions.
You take ownership.
You understand that the goal is not simply to keep trucks busy.
The goal is to keep the right equipment moving on the right freight at the right time, while providing good service to customers and protecting the profitability of the operation.
Why TSS?
At TSS, you will not be buried in a massive corporate bureaucracy or treated like a number on a dispatch screen.
You will work directly with an experienced transportation team and have a meaningful role in the daily operation of the company.
This is an opportunity for an experienced Planner / Dispatcher who wants to make a real contribution—not simply follow a script.
The Bottom Line
If you have the experience to look at a complicated transportation problem and say:
“Okay. Let's figure this out.”
—and then actually figure it out—we would like to hear from you.
Apply today and help keep TSS moving.
Transport Sales & Service is an equal opportunity employer. We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
This version deliberately positions the role as experienced and operationally important, rather than as a traditional “dispatcher needed” posting. It should help discourage applicants who are looking for their first transportation job and attract people who have actually had to recover a broken plan at 4:30 on a Friday afternoon.
