About Us

G.E. Barbour Inc. is a trusted name in food manufacturing. We are currently seeking a meticulous and proactive Quality Control Technician to join our team in Sussex, NB. In this role, you will divide your time equally (50/50) between our testing laboratory and the production floor, playing a vital part in maintaining our high standards for safe, quality foods.

Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Quality Control Technician to join our manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will play a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of product quality through rigorous inspection, analysis, and quality management practices. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement processes and ensure compliance with industry standards. The Quality Control Technician will work closely with production teams to uphold quality assurance protocols and support overall operational excellence.

Core Responsibilities

1. Lab Leadership & Coordination

Main Contact: Handle all email/verbal lab inquiries and coordinate solutions with the Technical Services Manager (TSM) and Operations.
Documentation: Create and issue Certificates of Analysis (C of A’s); assist the TSM with Product Masters and Finished Product Specifications.
Meetings & Communication: Attend daily production and bi-weekly HACCP/Food Safety meetings to advise on release schedules.
Daily Management: Organize daily lab tasks, manage work files, coordinate expedited testing, and order lab supplies.
Special Processes: Investigate customer complaints and returned goods; assist with product destroy orders and rework testing.

2. Lab Testing & Analysis

Microbiology: Prepare samples, pipet, and read petri-film plates (coliform, SPC, yeast, mold) and perform water testing.
Analytical Testing: Run routine tests for moisture, viscosity, water activity, density, color, and aflatoxin.
Sensory Checks: Perform regular organoleptic testing (taste, sight, smell, texture) on product batches for flavor consistency.
Maintenance: Log test results (data entry) and sterilize/calibrate lab equipment and solutions.

3. Production Floor Quality Assurance

Line Inspections: Verify fill weights, temperatures, process flows, packaging seals, and label accuracy.
Swabbing: Perform routine environmental (ATP) and allergen swabbing on production lines.
Inventory Control: Sample incoming raw materials, inspect storage areas, manage product holds/releases, and support R&D projects.

Qualifications

Education: High School diploma required (Post-secondary in science or food safety is a strong asset).
Experience: Minimum 2 years in a manufacturing environment (food manufacturing heavily preferred).
Skills: Excellent communication, strong organizational abilities to handle overlapping tasks, and strict adherence to Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs).
Physical: Ability to stand for long periods and move efficiently between the lab and production floor.
