Overview
The Structural Designer at T Engineering plays a key role in supporting the design and execution of structural systems for mining, backfill, and process plant projects. This role involves developing structural layouts, general arrangements, and detailed designs for steel and concrete structures, including equipment supports, platforms, access structures, foundations, pipe supports, and other industrial infrastructure.
The Structural Designer will prepare 2D drawings and 3D models, coordinate designs across engineering disciplines, and support projects from concept through detailed design, fabrication, and construction. The ability to prepare fabrication and shop-level drawings will be considered a strong asset.
This position requires strong technical design capabilities combined with practical knowledge of industrial construction and constructability. Experience in mining, milling, backfill plants, batch plants, material handling facilities, water treatment, or process plants is highly valued. The successful candidate will work closely with structural engineers, mechanical and piping designers, project managers, and construction teams and will contribute to the development and mentoring of junior designers and drafters.
Responsibilities
- Develop structural layouts, general arrangements, and detailed designs for mining, backfill, and process plant projects.
- Prepare structural steel and reinforced concrete drawings, including plans, sections, elevations, and connection details.
- Design and detail industrial structures such as equipment supports, platforms, stairs, ladders, walkways, pipe supports, foundations, and miscellaneous steel.
- Prepare and maintain 3D structural models and produce engineering drawings, including IFC drawings.
- Develop structural designs based on engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, and direction provided by structural engineers.
- Coordinate structural designs with mechanical equipment, piping, material handling systems, electrical systems, and other disciplines.
- Check 2D drawings and 3D models for clashes, accessibility, maintainability, and constructability.
- Conduct fieldwork to gather site information, verify existing conditions, perform measurements, and support construction activities.
- Support project execution from conceptual design through detailed design, fabrication, and construction.
- Prepare material take-offs and assist with bills of quantities and project estimates where required.
- Assist in reviewing vendor drawings, fabrication drawings, and other technical documentation.
- Coordinate with fabrication and construction teams to resolve design-related and constructability issues.
- Ensure drawings and models comply with applicable engineering standards, client specifications, project requirements, and T Engineering drafting standards.
- Maintain organized and accurate drawing, model, and design files throughout the project lifecycle.
- Incorporate engineering comments, interdisciplinary reviews, client feedback, and field changes into drawings and models.
- Review drawings and models prepared by junior designers, drafters, technicians, and technologists.
- Mentor and guide junior designers and drafters, sharing technical knowledge and good design practices.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of structural design standards, libraries, workflows, tools, and quality-control procedures.
- Adhere to Health & Safety responsibilities under all applicable regulations and T Engineering policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, technical diploma, or certificate in civil/structural engineering, engineering technology, drafting, or a related discipline.
- 4+ years of relevant structural design or drafting experience, preferably within mining, industrial, consulting, or process plant environments.
- Experience developing structural steel and reinforced concrete drawings for industrial applications.
- Experience with mining, backfill plants, material handling facilities, process plants, or other heavy industrial projects is considered a strong asset.
- Proficiency in 2D drafting and 3D structural modeling software.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD is required.
- Familiarity with structural design concepts, steel and concrete construction, fabrication practices, and applicable codes and standards.
- Ability to interpret structural engineering calculations, sketches, specifications, and design criteria and translate them into practical designs and drawings.
- Strong understanding of interdisciplinary coordination and the ability to identify clashes and constructability issues.
- Experience preparing fabrication or shop drawings is considered a strong asset.
- Field experience in industrial, mining, or construction environments is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s license and passport.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, tasks, and priorities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated mentoring ability and a collaborative teamwork mindset.
