Senior Research Associates:
Under the general direction of, and in collaboration with researchers and faculty members, positions at this level apply extensive knowledge in their field to lead high-level, complex research projects. Compared to Research Associates, these positions exercise greater input and judgment over the research, may be involved in setting research program objectives, and may be responsible for managing the team and project funds. Senior Research Associates would normally hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent qualifications and experience.
Position Overview:
The Senior Research Associate will play a leadership role within Safe and Affordable Project, conducting advanced quantitative analyses using Statistics Canada data accessed through the Research Data Centre (RDC). Working collaboratively with researchers, faculty members, and project partners, the successful candidate will develop, test, and refine statistical models related to housing and socioeconomic outcomes.
The position will contribute to the production of high-quality, publishable research outputs, including peer-reviewed journal articles, policy reports, and knowledge mobilization materials. The Senior Research Associate will also support research coordination activities, contribute to project planning and analytical strategy, and assist in mentoring junior research personnel and students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with researchers and faculty members to establish research objectives, analytical protocols and guidelines, and deadlines.
- Oversee project and operation level management of the research, including research funds, personnel, analysis of research results, and technical output.
- Conduct quality analysis on research operations and methodologies.
- Liaise with external research partners.
- Conduct high-level and complex academic research and literature searches.
- Present project status and findings to stakeholders.
- Secure funding opportunities; prepare and submit documentation required by funding agencies.
- Access and analyze complex Statistics Canada datasets within the Research Data Centre environment.
- Develop, test, validate, and refine advanced statistical and predictive models.
- Conduct quantitative analyses using administrative and linked data sources.
- Prepare manuscripts, technical reports, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams to support project deliverables and dissemination activities.
- Ensure compliance with Statistics Canada RDC policies, confidentiality requirements, and research ethics protocols.
- Mentor and support graduate students and junior research staff involved in quantitative research activities.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Sociology, Community Health Science, Economics, Public Policy, Epidemiology, Statistics, Data Science, Geography, or a related quantitative or social science discipline; or Master’s degree with equivalent qualifications and extensive research experience.
- Experience conducting independent research.
- Experience leading research projects.
- Advanced analytical and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrated expertise in advanced quantitative and statistical analysis methods.
- Experience working with large-scale administrative, survey, or linked datasets.
- Experience using statistical software such as R, Stata, SAS, SPSS, or Python.
- Experience working with Statistics Canada data, preferably within the Research Data Centre environment.
- Demonstrated ability to produce publishable academic research outputs.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
