Full job description

We are looking for an Activation Therapist for the Long-Term Care team of Niagara Ina Grafton health care professionals. At Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village, our team is passionate, friendly and possesses a positive attitude that is essential at our versatile organization. NIGGV is commonly referred to as the “Village,” and since 1958, we have grown to be one of the largest providers of services for seniors in Ontario. Today, we offer 338 rental/lease apartments and 47 bungalows of independent and assisted living. This community offers a variety of amenities (chapel, library, an auditorium with shuffleboard courts, four five-pin bowling lanes, billiard room, therapeutic/recreational swimming pool, lounges, atrium and café). The Village also accommodates 40 Long Term Care suites.

ROLE OBJECTIVE

Our team of Activation Therapists is required to show their willingness to go above and beyond, to learn new skills and flexibility to adapt quickly to the different levels of care. The Activation Therapist is responsible for planning programs and assisting our residents by facilitating participating in activities within our Long-Term Care Facility. You will be responsible for ensuring that all activities are completed with great sensitivity and compassion, in order to make people feel happier, healthier, and more comfortable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and implement programs with the resident and/or their Power of Attorney (POA)/Family member, documenting their purpose, goals, and objectives.
Provide assistance and adaptations to facilitate residents’ participation in activities.
Plan activities and trips outside the facility.
Provide individualized and group therapy services based on assessed need of the resident(s) including therapy sessions for residents not interested/unable to participate in larger groups.
Ensure therapy interventions are aligned with resident’s nursing and personal care activities.
Ensure the activation section of new admissions are completed within twenty-one (21) days from the admission date.
Assist Physiotherapists with residents’ exercises programs.
Participate in staff meetings, committees, and in-service education designated by the Director of Care.
Participate in Resident Care Conferences, as required by the Director of Care.
Develop and maintain up-to-date Resident Care Plans and RAI MDS (Activation section) as delegated by Director of Care.
Support Registered Staff by providing support, companionship and comfort care to palliative residents.
Under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator, the Activation Therapist assists with the social events for the Village Residents. (This involves five (5) hours per week among the staff of the Activation Department)
Oversee volunteers and students who provide support to recreation events by following organization volunteers program policies and procedures.
Coordinate the Pet Therapy Program for Long Term Care Residents, including compliance on Infection Control Protocols and Ministry requirements.
Prepare monthly reports as required by Director of Care.
Perform additional duties, as required.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

A Diploma in Recreation/Leisure studies from a community college or university.

Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a Long-Term Care Facility.

Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with vulnerable people and their families.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

An organized, efficient and flexible approach to the job, as well as good problem-solving abilities.

Time management skills and the ability to meet the needs of several clients at one time

A high level of patience, compassion and emotional resilience are “essential”

We are looking for somebody who able to demonstrate character traits such as empathy, flexibility and the ability to provide warm encouragement.

Please note that successful applicants will require a current Police Reference Check suitable for working with the vulnerable sector prior to commencing employment. It is required that all new hires are to have first and second dose of tuberculosis (TB) vaccination as a condition of employment with Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village.
