Position Summary
The CNC Setup Technician is responsible for the setup and teardown of workpieces from various CNC machines. The technician plays a critical role in maximizing machine uptime, overall cleanliness of machining department and optimal material flow through manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
Machine Setup
- Complete workpiece setup and teardown across multiple machining centers as per direction provided by CAM programmers and CNC operators using FCS, vises, magnets and other work holding methods.
- Responsible for setup accuracy and quality to documentation and direction provided.
- Ensure all workpieces are cleaned appropriately before removal from the machining center.
- Safely operate overhead cranes to load and unload large workpieces inside of machining centers.
Material Handling
- Maintain organization of machining staging areas.
- Move work pieces to next operation upon process completion.
- Support shipping and receiving, logistics and mold making with material handling requirements.
- Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, motorized pallet jack and other methods to move material.
- Use of forklift to empty internal chip bins into large outdoor bin for recycling.
Maintenance
- Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and inspection.
- Report and escalate equipment issues requiring advanced repair.
- Maintain cleanliness of all areas within the department, including machines, aisleways, staging areas and other areas as required.
- Assist the maintenance team with machine repairs as required.
Safety, Organization & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work cell.
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
- Ensure safe operation of machines, cranes, and tooling systems.
- Use required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
- Participate in continuous improvement and safety initiatives.
Reporting Structure:
- Reporting directly to the CNC Supervisor
Performance Metrics (Illustrative):
Production & Efficiency
- Average setup time vs. standard
- Number of setups completed per shift/week
- Machine uptime during setup/production transitions
- Reduction in downtime due to setup-related issues
Documentation Accuracy
- Completeness and accuracy of setup sheets and logs
- Repeat job setup success rate using documented procedures
Safety
- Zero lost-time incidents
- Full compliance with safety procedures and audits
- Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety on the shop floor.
Team Contribution
- Effective communication with team leaders and technicians
- Timely and accurate reporting (support tickets, inspections, logs)
- Participation in continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
- Proactive, problem-solving mindset with a focus on quality and efficiency.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple setups.
Working Environment:
- Manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, machinery, and industrial equipment.
- The position is a swing shift role with overtime required by workload.
- Use of PPE is mandatory.
- Fast-paced, detail-oriented environment requiring proactive problem-solving and strong communication
