MAC RENO-DESIGN-BUILD
POSITION: CONTROLLER
WHO WE ARE
MAC Reno-Design-Build is a growing Residential and light commercial, design and build company operating across multiple entities — MAC Reno DB, MAC Island Construction, Coastal Accents Millwork, and Lexer Holdings. We build and strengthen community through world-class craftsmanship, trusted partnerships, and a team that is humble, hungry, and smart.
We are a values-driven company. Collaboration, curiosity, integrity, and C.A.R.E. — Create A Referable Experience — are not words on a wall. They are how we make decisions, how we hold each other accountable, and how we show up for our clients and trade partners every day.
This is a Leadership Team seat. You will sit alongside the President and COO, contribute to the direction of the company, and be a key voice in how we grow — responsibly, profitably, and with full financial clarity.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a sharp, principled Controller who will be the financial and compliance truth-teller for the MAC Group. You are not here to rubber-stamp decisions. You are here to ensure leadership sees reality — not optimism drift — and that the numbers are accurate, timely, and trusted.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will own the full financial picture: month-end close, job costing and WIP integrity, cash forecasting, compliance, budgeting, and the systems and controls that hold it all together. You will also coach the Leadership Team to read and use the numbers, and you will say no — clearly and confidently — when deals break the margin or risk guardrails.
The right person for this role is a finance professional with strong construction accounting experience who can operate independently, lead a small finance team, and grow into a CFO-level strategic partner as MAC scales.
WHAT YOU OWN
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
You own the monthly close and the full set of consolidated and entity-level financials — P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow. Reconciliations are complete, accruals are sound, and reports come out on a dependable cadence. You provide a clear variance story and call out issues plainly. You maintain the chart of accounts and ensure that data from Acumatica and Buildertrend lands cleanly in the financials.
Cash, Treasury & Working Capital
You manage daily cash and a rolling 13-week cash forecast. You run the credit lines and banking relationships, align AP timing and payroll funding to the cash plan, and protect vendor relationships while driving AR discipline. No cash surprises. No covenant breaches.
Job Costing, WIP & Margin Governance
You own job cost integrity and WIP reporting for MAC Reno DB and MAC Island. Margins must be real and visible — not aspirational. You work directly with Production and Estimating to reconcile estimate-to-actual and cost-to-complete data, enforce pricing and margin guardrails, and surface slippage early so leaders can act before it hits cash.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Investment Finance
You lead annual and quarterly budgets and build rolling forecasts tied to capacity and backlog reality. You hold leaders to their numbers, bring variances with root cause and a plan, and update scenarios as conditions change. You partner with the President and COO on capex and major commitments — modelling ROI, payback, and covenant impact, then tracking results.
Compliance, Insurance & External Relationships
You own compliance for tax, filings, licenses, payroll remittances, WorkSafe BC, and banking covenants. Preventable misses are unacceptable. You manage the insurance program — GL, builders risk, auto, and more — coordinate claims, and serve as the primary liaison to the external CPA/tax firm, bankers, and insurers. You keep the group bankable and in good standing.
Internal Controls, Systems & Finance SOPs
You design and enforce internal controls, approval matrices, signing limits, and PO policies. You own the finance tech stack — Acumatica (ERP/accounting), Buildertrend (project management), payroll systems, and banking portals — and keep integrations healthy. You keep SOPs current and audit adherence. You continuously simplify, automate, and scale processes so growth does not outrun control.
Finance Team Leadership & Financial Coaching
You lead, manage, and hold accountable the finance and admin team — including the Sr. bookkeeper and any finance admin roles. You set clear outcomes, cadences, and SLAs. You coach the Leadership Team to read and use the numbers, making financial literacy part of how decisions get made. You maintain independence from Sales and Production — that independence is what makes you credible.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- Financial statements are accurate, timely, and trusted — no surprises at month-end.
- Job costing and WIP in Buildertrend reflects reality: estimate-to-actual is tracked, slippage is caught early.
- Cash is planned, not guessed — the 13-week forecast is live, accurate, and acted on.
- The group stays compliant and bankable — zero preventable tax, WCB, or covenant failures.
- The Leadership Team reads and uses the numbers to make better decisions.
- Budget vs actual variances are understood, owned, and managed by the people accountable for them.
- The finance team runs smoothly, and you are developing the people in it.
MEETINGS & CADENCE
- Weekly Leadership L10 — Financials, scorecard, and issues with the full Leadership Team.
- Weekly GSR with COO — Weekly reporting, issues, coaching, and priorities.
- Monthly Financial Review — Full financials and WIP review with Production and Estimating.
- Quarterly & Annual Planning — Budget and forecasting sessions with the Leadership Team.
- Periodic Bank & Advisor Meetings — External CPA, bankers, insurers, and regulatory contacts.
- Ad Hoc — Larger deals, capex decisions, or material risk and compliance issues.
TECHNOLOGY YOU WILL WORK IN
- Acumatica — primary ERP and accounting system for the MAC Group.
- TrailD – AP automated work flows and approvals
- Buildertrend — project management platform; source of job cost and WIP data.
- Lumber Payroll system — oversight of remittances, compliance, and cost reporting.
- Banking portals and treasury tools — daily cash and credit line management.
- Ninety.io and dashboard tools — financial KPIs and scorecard reporting.
- Google Document management — contracts, insurance, tax, and compliance records.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Required:
- CPA designation or finance degree (or equivalent experience demonstrating the same technical standard).
- Proven experience in construction or project-based accounting — job costing and WIP are non-negotiable.
- Strong command of Acumatica or a comparable ERP; experience integrating job cost data from a platform like Buildertrend is a strong advantage.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cash, banking relationships, and credit facilities.
- Deep knowledge of Canadian tax, payroll remittances, WorkSafe BC, and financial compliance.
- Track record of owning month-end close, consolidated reporting, and budgeting for a multi-entity group.
- Confidence and credibility to say no — to Sales, to Production, and to the Owner — when the numbers do not support a decision.
- Clear communicator who can translate complex financials into plain language for a non-finance audience.
Character
- Humble, hungry, and smart — the MAC standard for every team member.
- High integrity. The numbers are what they are. You do not manage perception; you manage reality.
- Calm under pressure. Construction is dynamic. Forecasts change. You stay anchored.
- Detail-obsessed but not paralyzed by detail — you know when to move.
- Builder mindset — you want to grow with the company, not just maintain the status quo.
WHY MAC
- A genuine Leadership Team seat — you are at the table, not reporting to it.
- A company that is growing with intention: multiple entities, real complexity, and a clear vision through 2027 and beyond.
- A culture built on integrity, collaboration, and doing the right thing — even when it is harder.
- A direct relationship with the President and COO — your voice matters and your work is visible.
- A path to grow into a CFO-level strategic partner as the group scales.
