POSITION: GOVERNANCE & POLICY COORDINATOR

HOURS: 35 HOURS PER WEEK

TERM: PERMANENT

SALARY: $60,000.00 to $68,000.00

REPORTS TO: SUMAS FIRST NATION GOVERNANCE AND POLICY OFFICER

PURPOSE & SUMMARY

The Governance and Policy Coordinator will work towards the conservation, Guardianship, and protection of the Natural Resources within Semá:th traditional territory. This position will work within the Governance and Natural Resources (“GNR”) Department and report directly to the Governance and Policy Officer. All responsibilities are governed by the policies and bylaws of the Semá:th First Nation (“SFN”). This role will work closely with corporate partners, industry, and the community to educate about and collaborate on governance and policy-related initiatives.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the Sto:lo referral process and review.
Ensure ongoing communication and meetings with all three levels of Government, private stakeholders, Community Members, and field experts as directed;
Prepare briefing materials, policy analysis, and advocacy documents to effectively engage with government representatives
Coordinate and organize meetings, briefings, and events to facilitate productive interactions between stakeholders and government officials;
Conduct research and provide insights on political and policy trends that impact SFN stakeholders;
Provide sound planning advice to the GNR department to assist in prioritizing work scopes and strategies related to growth;
Aid in the development of GNR-related policy directions for the strategic planning of SFN and the protection of Semá:th on/off reserve territory;
Co-launch pilot projects to test new approaches and concepts;
Collaborate with internal and external partners on progressive improvements in the governance and po Assist Sumas First Nation Administration on the environmental permitting and authorization processes and provide guidance on various environmental impact assessments and review procedures;
Research, analyze and interpret proposed and existing referral submissions, development applications, and new projects as well as identify, evaluate, and address issues of referral submissions;
Serve as a liaison between the SFN Member(s) and the GNR department, addressing relevant issues in a positive fashion;
Collaborate with the GNR team and SFN Communications to produce written and digital materials as well as comprehensive public affairs strategies that align with SFN objectives;
Manage incoming correspondence, ensuring timely delivery to the appropriate staff;
Draft routine letters and memoranda reflective of the Semá:th Declaration;
Undertake special projects as assigned, contributing to the goals of the department Nation.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

At least 3 years of experience in planning/programs and policy/project development and analysis or an equivalent amount of relevant experience and education;
Proven ability to analyze and interpret complex policy issues and translate them into actionable strategies;
Strong communication and presentation skills;
Prior experience working in a fast-paced office environment with the ability to prioritize;
Experience in working with First Nations communities and/or organizations an asset;
Proven ability to maintain confidentiality;
Working knowledge of office procedures, records management, and document processing;
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with peers, managers, community members, contractors, and suppliers;
First Nations descent is considered an asset;
Advanced knowledge and expertise about Microsoft Excel, Word, Zoom, Go-To Meetings;
Appreciation and knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions, procedures and protocols.

Pay: $60,000.00-$68,000.00 per year
