Overview
StoryBook Theatre is seeking a creative, strategic and hands-on Art Director to lead the organization’s visual identity, graphic design, creative marketing production and social media content.
The Art Director will be the primary permanent employee responsible for the marketing and creative function of StoryBook Theatre and the Beddington Theatre Arts Centre. The position will receive additional support through annual summer student hiring and, as resources allow, part-time marketing and graphic design assistance.
This is a working creative role. While the Art Director will contribute to strategy, planning and creative leadership, the position also requires significant hands-on execution of StoryBook’s day-to-day design, marketing, communications and campaign needs.
Responsibilities
- Collaboratively steward StoryBook Theatre’s visual identity and creative direction alongside the Artistic Producer.
- Develop and execute season creative assets, including posters, programs, advertisements, sales campaigns and digital materials.
- Lead the creative development and execution of marketing campaigns.
- Develop and execute email marketing campaigns.
- Create content for StoryBook’s digital and social media platforms.
- Capture photography and video content surrounding productions, programs, artists and organizational activities.
- Personally attend all production opening nights, StoryBook fundraisers, one-off productions, concerts and special events requiring social media documentation and posting.
- Create and publish timely social media content surrounding these events.
- Participate in season planning, production meetings and marketing budget discussions.
- Consider target audiences, market positioning and organizational priorities when developing campaigns.
- Manage relationships with printers, suppliers and other creative vendors.
- Oversee the quality, production and delivery of visual assets.
- Select, direct, manage and mentor summer students, interns and marketing assistants.
- Develop effective marketing and creative workflows.
- Maintain organized source files, templates and editable creative assets.
- Complete other reasonable duties relating to the marketing, sales and creative needs of StoryBook Theatre and the Beddington Theatre Arts Centre.
Skills & Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who:
- Have professional experience in graphic design, marketing, creative direction or a related field.
- Demonstrate a strong portfolio of print and digital design work.
- Are proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or comparable design platforms.
- Have experience developing and executing marketing campaigns across multiple channels.
- Understand social media content creation, scheduling and platform-specific best practices.
- Are comfortable capturing and editing photography and video content.
- Demonstrate strong visual storytelling, branding and design skills.
- Have excellent organizational, project-management and time-management abilities.
- Can manage multiple campaigns, productions and deadlines simultaneously.
- Can move confidently between creative strategy and hands-on execution.
- Have experience directing or mentoring assistants, interns or junior team members.
- Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with artistic, administrative and production teams.
- Are available to work required evenings and weekends surrounding productions and special events.
- Have experience in theatre, the arts or the non-profit sector; this is considered an asset.
Attributes We Value
We seek someone who:
- Has a genuine passion for live theatre and the arts.
- Brings creativity, initiative and strong problem-solving skills.
- Takes ownership of their work and follows projects through to completion.
- Is collaborative, adaptable and receptive to feedback.
- Can work independently while remaining aligned with broader organizational priorities.
- Thrives in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and deadlines.
- Understands the importance of documenting and sharing the people, productions and community behind StoryBook’s work.
- Values accessibility, diversity and inclusion in visual storytelling.
- Represents StoryBook Theatre with professionalism, integrity and enthusiasm.
Schedule
This is a full-time position with a regular schedule of:

The regular workday includes one 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks.
The Art Director is expected to personally attend all production opening nights, StoryBook fundraising events, one-off productions, concerts and special events requiring social media documentation and posting.
Because many of these events take place during evenings and weekends, flexibility is required. Regular weekday hours may be adjusted in consultation with the Artistic Producer to accommodate scheduled event attendance.

- Annual salary of $45,000-$50,000.
- Two weeks of paid vacation annually.
- Five paid personal days annually.
- Statutory holiday entitlements in accordance with Alberta Employment Standards and StoryBook Theatre’s annual holiday schedule.
