About the Department of Security Services

At Mount Royal University, our vision is to foster a safer university community built on trusting relationships. Security Services operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing an essential service that protects the people and property of our campus. Our team relies on a modern, integrated approach to safety and support, which includes specialized training in trauma-informed care, threat pattern recognition, mental health/distress line support, and crisis intervention.

We are looking for dedicated individuals who embody our core values of Integrity, Respect, Professionalism, and Accountability. In this role, you will engage with the community through diverse patrol modes (foot, bike, and vehicle) and utilize smart safety tools, advanced camera systems with AI analytics, and modern push-to-talk communications. From rapid emergency response and incident reporting to collaborating on proactive safety plans with our Safety Program Manager, our representatives are on the front lines of building a safer, more resilient campus community.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager of Security Services, the Security Supervisor ensures the safety of staff, students and the public that access the Mount Royal Campus as well as the protection of all buildings, grounds, and assets. The key focus of the Security Supervisor is to provide supervision and direction to a team of Security Representatives during assigned shifts. Duties include scheduling, assignment of work, quality control and performance management. The supervisor will also be responsible for coordinating the security response to critical incidents and accidents on the University campus and determining the response and resources required. Furthermore, will be the Incident Commander for serious situations until relieved by the Director of the Emergency Operations Centre.

The Shift Supervisor is expected to perform all functions included in the Security Representative functions.

The position works an averaging full-time work schedule of 37.5 hours per week. This will include days, nights and weekend shifts of eight to twelve hours on a rotational basis.

Responsibilities

Supervision of Security Representatives by determining and directing the correct course of action, assigning and posting task rotations, organize and delegate duties, act as a resource, monitor radio calls and provide direction, and train new employees
Ensures that all policies and procedures relating to the job function and role of the Security Department are properly carried out in a manner that makes the campus as safe and secure as possible
Makes decisions regarding the assistance of outside agencies e.g. the City of Calgary Emergency Services such as Police, Fire and EMS
Understands the operation of the CCTV, Fire Alarm System and Intrusion Alarm System
Provides briefings on incidents as well as special event requiring special attention
Initiates investigations and ensure the quality of Incident Report Writing
Monitors buildings and facilities to ensure a safe environment

Qualifications

One-year post-secondary certificate/program completion or equivalent
18 – 24 months of related experience
Basic understanding of the Canadian legal system is required
Security License through the Government of Alberta is required
Demonstrated supervisory skills
Valid First Aid, CPR Certificate and AED Certificate
Ability to remain calm under pressure
Strong independent judgement and problem solving skills
Demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Demonstrated strong customer service skills
