Guardian – Forestry Technician

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Forester, the Guardian – Forestry/Arch will be responsible for field activities related to ‘Na̱mg̱is Archaeological Surveys, Forestry Field Surveys, and Archaeological Surveys.

REPORTS TO: Forester

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Positively represent ‘Na̱mg̱is to members and the outside world in all aspects of their duties
Participate in Cultural Heritage Resource (CHR) Assessments of forestry cutblocks prior to harvest and road building activities.
Keep accurate, legible records of all field activities including plant occurrences and distribution and other non-timber observations.
Participate in forestry surveys associated with timber harvesting (ie: cutblock layout, stream assessment, karst surveys, post-harvest assessments, planting checks, and silviculture surveys).
Participate in Archaeological Assessments with ‘Na̱mg̱is Archaeologists, including digging, sifting, packing heavy equipment, shoveling, and other related activities.
Represent ‘Na̱mg̱is on other Archaeological Assessments in ‘Na̱mg̱is territory for other proponents as needed.
Participate in the recording and documentation of cultural natural resources of interest to ‘Na̱mg̱is members.
Related office activities as needed.
Care and repair of personal gear.
Safe operation and maintenance of equipment including vessels, all-terrain vehicles, trucks, trailers, etc.
Undertake training as assigned.
Support new/temporary staff.
Other duties as required by the Natural Resources Director, and/or the Administrator.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to take notes/photos and collect other data using tablets.
Ability to work in challenging and remote wilderness environments.
Ability to understand and follow instructions from CMT Crew Lead.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated competency in field knowledge (compassing, map reading etc).
Proficiency with VHF radio communication and protocols.
Knowledge of ‘Na̱mg̱is culture.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS

Resources Information Standards Committee Archaeological and CMT Inventory Training for Crew Members (RISC)
Grade 12 or equivalent
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
Basic First Aid

UNUSUAL JOB FEATURES

Various duties that include strenuous manual labor
Irregular work hours which may include overnight and weekends
Extensive outdoor work
Tasks often include travel by ferry and truck/boat to work site or as part of activities
