The Township of Adjala-Tosorontio is located north of the GTA, at the southwest border of Simcoe County with a population of 11,000 residents and offers rural living with proximity to urban amenities.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Public Works Supervisor – Operations & Maintenance, the Parks Operator serves as the Township’s primary operational resource and subject matter expert for Township parks, trails, green spaces, playgrounds, sports courts, and sports fields.
The Parks Operator is responsible for the technical delivery, inspection, maintenance, and condition monitoring of all parks related assets. This includes conducting routine patrols, identifying risks and deficiencies, determining remedial work required, and ensuring assets are maintained in a safe, functional, and serviceable condition.
While the Supervisor provides administrative oversight, scheduling coordination, and resource allocation, the Parks Operator is accountable for day-to-day operational decision-making including prioritization of work, field readiness, closures, and maintenance standards, and for maintaining accurate inspection and maintenance records to support compliance and asset management.
Duties & Responsibilities, but not limited to:
· Acts as primary operational resource responsible for the condition, safety, and functionality of Township parks assets including playgrounds, sports fields, sports courts, green spaces, and inactive cemeteries.
· Conducts routine patrolling and condition monitoring of all assigned sites to identify safety hazards, vandalism, misuse, encroachments, or maintenance concerns.
· Performs routine litter collection and debris removal within all assigned sites to maintain cleanliness, safety, and public usability.
· Responds to reported concerns, service requests, and issues, investigates conditions, determines required actions, and takes corrective or escalation measures as appropriate.
· Plans, performs, and documents regular inspections of parks assets, amenities, equipment, green spaces, inactive cemeteries, sidewalks, and trails.
· Conducts municipal sidewalk inspections and identifies deficiencies.
· Records inspection findings, deficiencies, and recommendations.
· Reports sidewalk and trail deficiencies for coordination and repair planning.
· Serves as technical lead for turf maintenance and baseball diamond operations, excluding contracted mowing services.
· Performs baseball diamond grooming including dragging and seasonal preparation.
· Carries out layout, start-up, and shutdown of baseball diamonds and turf areas in accordance with established standards.
· Monitors field conditions and weather impacts and determines readiness or closures to protect public safety and asset integrity.
· Works collaboratively with organized sports leagues, including baseball and soccer user groups, regarding field conditions, maintenance needs, and operational concerns.
· Monitors and oversees contracted lawn mowing services for quality, completeness, and compliance with specifications, reporting concerns as required.
· Collects, reviews, and provides quotes for repairs, installations, or replacements related to parks and playground furniture, accessories, and amenities (ie benches, bleachers, nets, signage, playground components, etc).
· Collects pricing and scope details for contracted parks-related services, including playground repairs, court surface work, speciality maintenance, and tree services.
· Safely operates Township-owned or rented vehicles, equipment, machinery and powered tools to conduct parks operations.
· Performs inspections and routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, greasing, cleaning, and minor adjustments.
· Maintains accurate inspection logs and maintenance records.
· Assesses the condition and general health of municipal trees within parks, green spaces, sports fields, courts, sidewalks, and trails.
· Identifies visible signs of damage, decline, disease, storm impact, or safety risk and recommends appropriate remedial action.
· Coordinates with Supervisor to facilitate contracted tree services, including removals, pruning, or arborist assessments, as required.
· Maintains inventory of parks-related supplies and materials required for baseball diamonds, courts, playgrounds, and associated amenities.
· Monitors stock levels of equipment, accessories, consumables, and maintenance materials and identifies replenishment needs to support operational and seasonal readiness.
· Performs winter maintenance operations related to parks and parks-adjacent infrastructure including snow clearing and winter patrolling of municipal sidewalks and trails.
· Operates compact tractor, utility vehicles, and related equipment for sidewalk and trail snow removal, salting, and safety maintenance.
· Conducts winter condition inspections of sidewalks, trails, and park areas to identify hazards and report required remedial action.
· Builds, operates, maintains, dismantles, and closes outdoor ice pads in collaboration with Township staff and citizen volunteers.
· Supports the plowing of municipal parking lots as required.
· Maintains inspection logs and records related to winter operations.
· Applies established parks-related work methods, procedures, inspection practices, and maintenance standards in carrying out daily operations, and provides input or general information on operational practices as requested.
· Works collaboratively with the Supervisor to align operational needs with work plans, schedules, and resources.
· Supports Township and community events, including setup and takedown, as required.
· Provides operational support to Public Works functions as assigned and as operationally required. Assists with general Public Works activities during peak periods, emergency response, or seasonal demands, while ensuring that primary responsibility for parks operations is maintained.
Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Parks Operations, Horticulture, Landscape Technology, or a related is preferred.
· Minimum 2 to 3 years experience in parks operations, landscape maintenance, or related municipal maintenance.
· Experience coordinating and monitoring contracted services is preferred.
· CSA Z614 Certified Playground Inspector (or equivalent recognized certification) or ability to obtain.
· Chainsaw certification.
· OTM Book 7 – Temporary Conditions an asset.
· Mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate and perform basic maintenance on equipment, machinery, and various power tools.
· A high degree of independence and sound judgement.
· Ability to assess tree condition and recognize hazards requiring further evaluation.
· Strong organizational skills for managing inspections, records, inventories, and quotes.
· Working knowledge of health and safety practices, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requirements, and applicable Minimum Maintenance Standards.
· Knowledge of tree health assessment and arboriculture basics.
· Ability to read and interpret safe design standards for public spaces.
· Valid Class AR Driver’s Licence (or higher, ie AZ) in good standing.
· On-call, after-hours work as required for winter operations and emergencies.
This is a newly created, full-time permanent position with a targeted start date of July 20, 2026.
Compensation: $28.44 to $35.56 per hour (2026 rates).
