Position Summary
Calgary Paving Ltd. is seeking an experienced Asphalt Raker to join our paving crews. The successful candidate must have at least two years of hands-on asphalt-raking experience, with a strong background in residential driveways and commercial paving projects.
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone who understands proper asphalt placement, grade control, drainage, joint construction, tie-ins and handwork—and who can consistently produce a smooth, professional finished product.
Responsibilities
- Rake and place hot-mix asphalt on residential driveways, commercial parking lots, pathways, repairs, overlays and tie-ins.
- Establish and maintain proper grades, slopes and drainage.
- Perform detailed handwork around curbs, catch basins, garage entrances, buildings, utility structures and other obstructions.
- Build clean longitudinal and transverse joints.
- Correct low spots, high spots, segregation and uneven asphalt distribution before compaction.
- Work closely with the paver operator, roller operators, foreman and other crew members.
- Shovel, lute and move asphalt where machine placement is not possible.
- Assist with asphalt preparation, cleanup and general site duties as required.
- Identify grade, drainage or workmanship concerns and immediately report them to the foreman.
- Follow Calgary Paving’s safety procedures and all applicable workplace requirements.
- Help maintain rakes, lutes, shovels and other paving tools.
- Assist with mobilizing equipment, materials and crew vehicles when required.
- Represent Calgary Paving professionally when working at customers’ homes and commercial properties.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of professional asphalt-raking experience.
- Demonstrated experience on both residential driveways and commercial paving projects.
- Strong understanding of asphalt grades, drainage, compaction, joints, edges and tie-ins.
- Ability to perform detailed finishing work to a high standard.
- Valid driver’s licence is mandatory.
- Clean driving record and ability to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Reliable transportation to Calgary Paving’s shop or assigned meeting location.
- Ability to safely perform physically demanding work outdoors for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy tools and materials.
- Willingness to work long hours, early mornings, evenings and occasional weekends during the paving season.
- Dependable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a crew.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with pavers, skid steers, rollers or other asphalt equipment.
- Experience paving acreage driveways, parking lots, overlays, repairs and new-construction projects.
- Driver’s licence.
- CSTS, WHMIS, First Aid or other relevant safety certifications.
- Experience towing equipment or driving company trucks.
