The Opportunity
We are seeking a hands-on QA Engineer to establish and lead quality assurance across the web applications, data tools, APIs, and AI-enabled features that support our energy and emissions programs. As Enerva's first dedicated QA professional, you will define the testing approach, build repeatable processes, and work closely with developers and program teams to improve quality throughout the software development lifecycle.
Our platforms produce energy-savings, emissions-reduction, and incentive calculations used by program participants, utilities, and government agencies. Accuracy is therefore as important as usability. This role is well suited to someone who is systematic, analytical, curious, and comfortable creating lightweight tools when standard solutions do not meet the need.
What You'll Do
- Plan and execute exploratory, functional, integration, regression, and release testing for web applications and data tools.
- Validate energy, emissions, and incentive calculations by tracing results to source data and confirming their accuracy.
- Design, implement, and maintain automated tests, prioritizing the areas where automation provides the greatest value.
- Test APIs and system integrations, including system behaviour when upstream data is delayed, incomplete, malformed, or unavailable.
- Develop practical approaches for testing AI and large language model (LLM) features, including defining evaluation criteria and creating representative test sets.
- Document defects with clear reproduction steps, expected and actual results, supporting evidence, and an assessment of severity and business impact.
- Own pre-release quality checks and support user acceptance testing with Enerva's program delivery teams.
- Review requirements early to identify ambiguity, gaps, risks, and testability concerns before development begins.
- Collaborate with developers, program teams, and other stakeholders to strengthen quality practices and prevent recurring issues.
- Contribute flexibly across a collaborative, growing team as priorities evolve.
What We're Looking For
- At least two years of software testing experience, or equivalent hands-on experience through previous roles, co-op placements, internships, or substantial projects.
- A strong testing mindset, with the ability to identify edge cases, undocumented workflows, and risks that others may overlook.
- Working knowledge of Python or JavaScript/TypeScript sufficient to automate tests, understand the code being tested, and build small supporting tools.
- Comfort working with SQL and validating information directly against source data rather than relying only on the user interface.
- Clear and concise written communication, particularly when documenting defects, business impacts, and test results.
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently.
- A self-starter approach and interest in helping establish QA standards, tools, and processes from the ground up.
Early-career applicants: Recent graduates and early-career candidates with strong practical experience are encouraged to apply. We assess demonstrated capability alongside formal experience.
Nice to Have
- Experience with test automation frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or pytest, including running automated test suites in continuous integration environments such as GitHub Actions.
- Experience with API and integration testing tools such as Postman, as well as exposure to performance or load testing.
- Experience testing AI, machine learning, or LLM-based features, including the creation of evaluation data sets.
- Knowledge of accessibility testing requirements, including WCAG and AODA.
- Familiarity with AWS or Azure cloud environments and software deployment pipelines.
- An interest in or background related to energy, sustainability, climate, or emissions reduction.
- Experience working in an early-stage, growing, or small-team environment.
