MPC is currently seeking a full-time Mould Maker. The successful candidate will work with our Award Winning Mold Makers and Engineers and be provided the opportunity to work on some of the most technically challenging and non-commodity molds in the market, including planetary rotational cores, with internal mechanical movements, rotating gear rings, insert molding and mold over parts. MPC is known worldwide as a precision plastic parts supplier for the automotive industry; we manufacture the most challenging parts with the highest quality standards and complex configurations requiring close tolerances of up to 0.0002" (0.005MM).
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Mold Maker builds new injection molds and repairs existing molds and tooling with precision and craftsmanship. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with problem-solving abilities, ensuring molds function correctly and meet quality standards to support MPC’s mission of delivering world-class manufacturing solutions.
DUTIES:
Mold Assembly and Construction:
- Assemble and adjust injection molds with component parts including cavities, cores, slides, lifters, plates, guide pins, ejector systems, and cooling lines.
- Fit and hand-work mold components to achieve proper clearances and alignment.
- Drill and tap mounting holes, water line connections, and ejector pin clearances.
- Blend parting lines and polish mold surfaces to achieve required finish.
- Bench fit components using files, stones, scrapers, and hand tools.
- Read and interpret mold drawings, assembly prints, and technical specifications.
- Test completed molds for proper operation before delivery to production.
Machining and Fabrication:
- Operate manual machining equipment including mills, lathes, surface grinders, and drill presses.
- Perform precision grinding, drilling, tapping, and reaming operations.
- Machine custom components and repair parts as needed.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for various materials.
- Utilize basic math for machining calculations including angles, offsets, and dimensions.
- Deburr and finish machined parts to meet quality standards.
Mold Repair & Modification:
- Assess mold condition and determine repair strategy.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose issues including flash, shorts, ejection problems, and cooling issues.
- Repair damaged or worn mold components through welding, machining, or replacement.
- Arrange for welding and rework with appropriate departments or specialists.
- Modify existing molds to improve function, add features, or correct defects.
- Coordinate with CNC department for component replacement or fabrication.
- Document all repairs and modifications in ERP systems.
Quality and Measurement:
- Use precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and gauge pins to ensure components meet print specifications.
- Verify dimensions, clearances, and alignments throughout assembly process.
- Consistently work to close tolerances throughout all operations.
- Inspect mold function before delivery to molding floor.
- Document assembly times, completion status, and quality issues in ERP system.
Welding and Surface Finishing:
- Perform TIG welding on tool steels and other mold materials for repair and buildup.
- Prepare surfaces for welding through proper cleaning and preheating procedures.
- Grind and finish welded areas to restore original contours and surfaces.
- Polish mold surfaces using stones, abrasives, and polishing compounds to achieve required finish levels.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Journeyman Mold Maker certification or equivalent experience of 4 or more years.
- Strong knowledge of injection mold construction, assembly, and function.
- Proficiency with manual machining equipment (mills, lathes, grinders).
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments.
- Experience with precision hand tools and bench work.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with high standards for cleanliness and workplace organization.
- Proficiency with Windows systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams).
- Commitment to health & safety, continuous learning, and quality excellence.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 10+ years of Mold Making experience.
- Experience with molds having complexity, high-cavitation, slides, and lifters.
- Overhead crane and forklift experience, training, and certification.
- TIG welding certification or extensive experience welding on tool steels.
- Polishing and texturing expertise for cosmetic surfaces.
- Experience with hot runner systems and manifolds.
- Knowledge of EDM (die-sinker and wire) processes.
- Solidworks or other CAD software for visualization and measurement.
- ERP system experience for job tracking and documentation.
- Toolroom CNC experience is an asset.
- Experience with mold flow analysis and cooling system optimization is an asset.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to stand for extended periods at workbenches and machines.
- Capability to lift and maneuver components to 50 lbs.
- Manual dexterity for precision work and fine adjustments.
- Visual acuity to read measurements and inspect parts to tight tolerances.
