Full job description

Our Organization:

The Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre, owned and operated by the non-profit Gray House Guild, is dedicated to offering exceptional long-term care services. Our experienced team is committed to delivering resident-centered care in a supportive environment. We provide a range of services, including senior long-term care, independent living options, an Adult Day Support Program, and on-site Child Daycare Services. At the Centre, we deeply value our employees and strive to create a rewarding and supportive work environment.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Occupational and Physical Therapies, the Occupational Therapist provides comprehensive occupational therapy services to our long term care residents to optimize function and promote independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life.

Working collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team, the Occupational Therapist assesses, develops, implements, and evaluates person-centered interventions; provides clinical leadership to Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy Assistants (OT/PTAs); and supports the delivery of high-quality occupational therapy services in accordance with Alberta legislation, professional standards, and evidence-informed practice.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Resident Assessment

· Complete comprehensive occupational therapy assessments to identify residents' functional, cognitive, physical, psychosocial, seating, positioning, transfer, skin integrity, edema, feeding/swallowing and environmental needs, as appropriate.

· Conduct standardized and non-standardized assessments to support clinical decision-making, which may include cognitive, mood, transfer status, seating, positioning, skin integrity, and lower extremity vascular assessments (e.g., ABI/PPG).

· Participate in resident admissions, annual reviews, and interdisciplinary care conferences, as required.

2. Clinical Leadership and Supervision

· Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and direction to Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy Assistants (OT/PTAs) in the implementation and evaluation of therapy programs and interventions.

· Mentor students and support orientation, competency development, and ongoing education of staff and volunteers.

· Promote evidence-informed practice and contribute to the development and evaluation of occupational therapy services.

3. Treatment Planning and Intervention

· Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate individualized, person-centered occupational therapy intervention plans based on resident needs, goals, and clinical presentation.

· Promote residents' independence, safety, comfort, and quality of life through interventions that support meaningful occupation and maximize functional abilities.

· Provide occupational therapy interventions as appropriate, which may include seating and positioning, transfers, upper extremity rehabilitation, pressure injury prevention, edema management/compression therapy, feeding/swallowing support, environmental modification, and behavioural strategies.

· Evaluate outcomes and modify interventions based on resident response and changing needs.

4. Equipment and Assistive Technology

· Assess, recommend, prescribe, and authorize adaptive equipment, mobility devices, seating systems, wheelchairs, pressure redistribution surfaces, and other assistive technology, as appropriate.

· Coordinate equipment trials, vendor consultations, funding applications (including AADL), procurement, and follow-up, as required.

· Recommend environmental modifications and adaptive strategies to support safe participation in daily activities.

5. Education and Consultation

· Provide education and consultation to residents, families, staff, students, and volunteers regarding occupational therapy services and interventions, as appropriate.

· Act as an occupational therapy resource to the interdisciplinary team to support best practices and resident-centered care.

6. Documentation and Care Planning

· Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation in accordance with legislative, regulatory, and organizational requirements.

· Contribute to care planning, Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments, quarterly reviews, and ongoing evaluation of resident outcomes.

7. Quality Improvement and Professional Practice

· Practice in accordance with Alberta legislation, regulatory standards, organizational policies, and evidence-informed occupational therapy practice.

· Participate in quality improvement, program evaluation, committee work, research activities, and continuous professional development.

· Maintain professional competence through continuing education and evidence-informed practice.

8. Health, Safety, and Risk Management

· Promote safe, resident-centered care through assessment, education, clinical recommendations, least-restraint approaches, and evidence-informed practice.

· Identify and support mitigation of risks related to mobility, transfers, falls, skin integrity, seating, equipment, and the care environment.

· Support fall prevention, restraint reduction, infection prevention and control practices, and compliance with occupational health and safety requirements.

Education & Professional Requirements:

Required:

· Bachelor or Master of Science in Occupational Therapy

· Registration and good standing with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT)

· A cleared Vulnerable Sector Check

· Up to date Immunizations

Preferred:

· Minimum 2-3 years of experience as an Occupational Therapist

· Experience working in continuing care setting

· Experience with dementia care

· Experience completing wheelchair and seating assessments

· Experience with completing lower leg assessments including completion and interpretation of ankle brachial index (ABIs) and photoplethysmography (PPGs)

· Knowledge of pressure injury prevention

· Experience with MDS RAI 2.0

· AADL authorizer

· Respect for and interest in working with the elderly

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, move throughout the facility, and respond to changing resident needs

· Ability to assist with resident positioning, transfers, equipment adjustments, and demonstrations using approved safe resident handling techniques and mechanical lifting devices, as appropriate

· Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching

· Ability to push, pull, lift, carry, and reposition therapy equipment and mobility devices within safe work practices

· Sufficient manual dexterity and fine motor coordination to perform assessments, fabricate or adjust adaptive devices, document electronically, and safely use therapeutic and assessment equipment

Benefits: Health and Dental with Blue Cross after 3 months waiting period.

Long Term Disability, AD&D and EAP after 3 months waiting period.

Employer and Employee Split: Employer pays 75% and Employee pays 25%

Pay: $42.51-$54.67 per hour
