Position Overview
Reporting to the Foreman or Project Supervisor, the Utility Line Locator is responsible for identifying and marking the location of underground utilities using electronic locating equipment to identify underground gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications, and fibre optic lines, to prevent damage during excavation and construction activities. This role ensures public safety, regulatory compliance, and protection of infrastructure in accordance with Alberta One-Call (Utility Safety Partners) regulations and company standards.
Position Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education in a related field is an asset).
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Knowledge of underground utility locating techniques and equipment (preferred).
- Understanding of Alberta One-Call regulations and utility safety standards (asset).
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively with no supervision.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work safely in and around roadways, construction sites, and residential areas.

- Intermediate First Aid, ABGCA Approved Ground Disturbance Level II, CSO
Reporting Relationship
The Utility Line Locator reports directly to a Foreman or Project Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
- Use electronic locating equipment to identify underground gas, electric, water, sewer, telecommunications, and fiber optic lines.
- Accurately mark utility locations using industry-standard colour codes and paint/flags.
- Interpret utility maps, drawings, and as-built plans.
- Understanding of IFC drawings as well as how to identify property lines and set alignment for drills and plows.
- Document findings using digital mapping systems and complete required reports.
- Communicate clearly with contractors, excavators, property owners and project managers regarding site conditions and safety requirements.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) regulations.
- Maintain and calibrate locating equipment and company vehicle.
- Work outdoors in various weather (heat, cold, rain, snow) and terrain conditions across Alberta.
- Outdoor fieldwork in urban, rural, and industrial environments.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Other duties as assigned
