Full job description

Position Overview:

The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators and related heavy equipment in support of civil construction projects. This role focuses on excavation for municipal infrastructure including water and sewer services, laterals, drainage systems, foundations, and site servicing. The operator will work closely with site supervisors, labourers, and pipe layers to complete projects safely, on schedule, and to specification.

Key Responsibilities:

Operate excavators and other heavy equipment safely and efficiently on construction sites.
Perform water and sewer tie-ins, laterals, trenching, grading, and backfilling.
Excavate for foundations, footings, and underground utilities.
Work from site plans, grade stakes, and instructions from site supervisors.
Maintain proper trench safety and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Coordinate with pipe layers and ground crews during installation of water, sewer, and storm infrastructure.
Conduct daily equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
Ensure work meets project specifications and municipal standards.
Maintain clean and organized job sites.
Follow all company safety policies and provincial occupational health and safety regulations.

Qualifications:

Minimum 5–10 years experience operating excavators in civil construction.
Demonstrated experience with municipal water and sewer installations, tie-ins, and laterals.
Ability to read site plans and understand grades and elevations.
Strong knowledge of trench safety and underground utility work.
Valid driver’s license (Class 3 or higher considered an asset).
Experience working around live municipal services is an asset.
Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with crew members.

Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
Dependable, punctual, and able to work extended hours when required.

Compensation

Hourly wage based on experience $42-48
Overtime in accordance with Nova Scotia Labour standards.
Benefits package may be available.

Pay: $35.00-$40.00 per hour
