About the Role
The Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and acquiring the diverse raw materials, hardware, and outsourced services needed to build custom retail environments. In a custom-driven shop, you will work closely with engineering and project managers to translate unique design concepts into physical realities, ensuring all specialty woods and components arrive on time and within budget.
Duties
Custom Sourcing & Procurement
- Material Procurement: Source premium hardwoods, specialized plywoods, MDF, plastics, acrylics, and high-pressure laminates (HPL).
- Specialty Hardware: Estimate and purchase project-specific hardware, including heavy-duty slides, specialized hinges, locks, LED lighting systems, and custom fasteners.
- Finishing & Subcontracting: Coordinate external finishing services such as powder coating and custom glass fabrication.
- BOM Interpretation: Review custom architectural drawings and Bills of Materials (BOM) to identify long-lead items and unique material requirements early in the project lifecycle.
Vendor & Lead-Time Management
- Supplier Network: Build and maintain a diverse network of reliable vendors capable of quick-turnaround deliveries for low-volume, custom orders.
- Lead-Time Optimization: Track fabrication schedules closely to ensure materials land precisely when production needs them, minimizing shop floor bottlenecks.
- Cost Mitigation: Negotiate competitive pricing on low-volume orders and leverage bulk purchasing for core, repeating materials (like standard fasteners or sheet goods).
Inventory & Project Support
- Job Costing: Partner with estimating and project management teams to provide accurate, real-time material pricing during the bidding phase.
- Just-In-Time (JIT) Logistics: Manage inventory levels carefully to balance shop space constraints, avoiding excessive dead stock from leftover custom project materials.
- Quality Control: Inspect incoming custom materials for accuracy, defect-free finishes, and compliance with project specs; manage rapid returns or replacements with vendors when necessary.
Job RequirementsExperience & Education
- Experience: 3–5+ years of purchasing experience in a job-shop, custom woodworking or store fixture manufacturing environment.
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, or a related technical field is preferred or equivalent hands-on manufacturing experience is highly valued.
Skills & Knowledge
- Blueprint Reading: Advanced ability to read and interpret custom architectural blueprints, millwork drawings, and CAD details.
- Material Knowledge: Deep familiarity with wood species, veneer matching, and laminate characteristics.
- Agility & Problem Solving: Proven ability to handle frequent design revisions, shifting project scopes, and urgent deadlines.
- Software Skills: Proficiency with ERP/MRP software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
