South Shore Regional Centre for Education

The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) practices the culturally responsive pedagogy approach in providing an inclusive, diverse, equitable, safe and healthy education that supports learning and success both personally and academically to the 59,000 residents of Lunenburg and Queens Counties, an area of 5,250 square kilometres and a total of 23 schools.

Position: Casual Bus Drivers - Lunenburg & Queens Counties
Employee Group: CUPE
Schedule: Various - 5 hours per day
Status & Wage: Casual position - $28.82/hr

Qualifications:
Valid driver's license; trainees will be required to obtain a Class 2B with air brake endorsement license. (This training program will prepare participants for the test for the Class 2B driver's license and air brake endorsement.)

Completion of South Shore Regional Centre for Education bus driver training course or equivalent.

Ability to work collaboratively with other transportation staff.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Effective interpersonal skills.

Characteristics:
Strong driving skills.
Effective communication skills.
Courtesy in dealing with students and staff.
Committed to safety and service.

Task Dimensions:
Operates assigned vehicle safely and in compliance with relevant regulations and policies, for example:
The National Safety Code, the Motor Carrier Act, the Registry of Motor Vehicle Regulations, Board Policy and internal procedures as established from time to time by the Transportation Manager.
Enforces safety rules and discipline on the school bus according to the Board policy and the Motor Carrier Regulations.
Uses good judgment in determining road conditions during inclement weather and Advises Transportation Manager whether or not such conditions pose a hazard to transporting students safely.

Ensures his/her bus is well maintained, for example:
Cleans inside and outside of the bus daily.
Reports any mechanical or body repair problems to the Lead Head Mechanic.
Submits in a timely fashion, any necessary driver records and reports, for example:
Time and Mileage reports, Extra Curricular Trip forms, Fuel Consumption, School Bus Discipline Reports, Vehicle Accident Report forms, Student Information Sheets, and National Safety Code. Daily Log.

Hours may change due to overnight resting spot‎. ‎A new time and meterage must be completed within one week of ‎hiring‎.‎

These are casual bus driver positions with the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The location varies based on need. The rate of pay is $28.82/hour. Successful applicants will take the South Shore Regional Centre for Education bus driver training program which is provided free of charge. This training program will prepare participants for the test for the Class 2B driver's license. A clean driver's abstract and Criminal Records check is required and experience working with school age children is an asset.

BACKGROUND/SECURITY CHECKS:
The South Shore Regional Centre for Education requires all newly hired employees to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record / Vulnerable Sector Check and a Nova Scotia Child Abuse Register Check. We will accept checks completed within the last 3 months.

Regional Office based positions require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license. Some school based positions also require travel and candidates may be required to provide a valid driver's license.
