Position Summary
Kemetco is seeking experienced Pilot Plant Operators / Pilot Technicians to support a 2-year pilot operation at its Richmond, BC facility. This role is hands-on and operations-focused, supporting pilot-scale hydrometallurgical and mineral processing circuits under the direction of senior technical staff.
Positions are offered as a 1-2 year fixed-term contracts, with the potential for transition to permanent employment based on performance and business needs. The role involves a combination of regular daytime hours and shift work during active pilot campaigns, including commissioning and continuous operation.
This position is well suited to operators or technicians with mining, mineral processing, or chemical plant experience who are comfortable working in non-routine, evolving operations.
Key Responsibilities
Pilot Plant Operations
- Operate pilot plant equipment in accordance with approved operating procedures, test plans, and safety requirements.
- Monitor process conditions (flows, levels, temperatures, pressures, pH, etc.) and make routine operating adjustments within defined limits.
- Support continuous and semi-continuous pilot campaigns, including shift-based operation.
- Assist with startup, commissioning, shutdown, and transition between test campaigns.
- Train new hires and cross-train other staff members.
Sampling, Data Collection & Housekeeping
- Collect process samples (liquid, solid, slurry) according to sampling plans.
- Record operating data accurately and consistently in logs or electronic systems.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards in pilot plant and support areas.
- Assist with preparation, handling, and disposal of process materials and wastes.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures applicable to pilot operations.
- Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), pre-job safety meetings, and toolbox talks.
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, near-misses, and equipment issues.
- Support safe handling and transfer of chemicals, reagents, and process solutions.
Equipment & Mechanical Support
- Perform routine equipment checks, inspections, and basic maintenance tasks.
- Assist millwrights and technical staff with equipment installation, modification, and troubleshooting.
- Support lockout/tagout, isolation, and verification activities under direction.
Team & Communication
- Work closely with metallurgists, engineers, millwrights, and safety personnel.
- Communicate operating status, deviations, and observations clearly during shift handovers.
- Adapt to changing operating conditions, test objectives, and procedures typical of pilot operations.
Qualifications & Experience
- Technical diploma or equivalent experience in hydrometallurgical or chemical processes, mineral processing, or industrial operations.
- 1–5+ years of experience as a plant operator, process technician, or pilot operator in mining, mineral processing, or chemical plants.
- Hands-on experience with equipment such as pumps, tanks, agitators, filters, reactors, and piping systems. Experience with leaching, solvent extraction, water treatment, and crystallization are strong assets.
- Familiarity with basic process instrumentation and control concepts.
- Ability to follow schematics, standard operating procedures, and manuals.
- Strong understanding of industrial safety practices, including chemical handling and permit-based work.
- Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts and flexible schedules during pilot campaigns, including night shifts and weekends
Work Environment & Additional Information
- Compensation: Base annual salary range of $50,000–$110,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional compensation may be available during periods of extended or shift-based pilot operations.
- Position based at Kemetco’s Richmond, BC facility.
